Depends on the specific weapon and loading system, the most prolific firearms and perhaps therefore best for this explanation is the Glock 17 pistol and the AR platform rifles. Glock style detachable magazines have nothing to do with clips because they are not compatible with stripper clip loading. AR platform rifles include but are not limited to the AR10, AR15, AR180… these platform rifles are typically chambered in intermediary calibers and usually use detachable magazines that are compatible but not limited to stripper clip loading. For most AR platform detachable magazines (commonly known as “mags”), you are able to put a loading feed on the magazine, then slide a loaded stripper clip in the feeder and press down on the ammunition to rapidly load 10 rounds. Each stripper clip is capable of carrying 10 rounds. Thus, for a standard capacity AR15 style 5.56mm ammo detachable magazine, you would need 3 loaded stripper clips to load said magazine to capacity. A bit more explanation of stripper clips, stripper clips are one of many types of clips that are meant for speed loading a magazine, internal or detachable. You can either load your own clips, or in some cases buy ammo already pre-loaded in clips. There are another type of clip known as moon clips meant for faster reloading of a revolver.
