He is a dude, but because the sentence is talking about His Mother it takes on the mothers pronoun, it is just a bad translation as the language rules are a bit different so you end up with mistakes sometimes. Just remember that

It’s an issue with translated novels as the pronoun is not distinct or something in the language so you get mixups if they are talking about someone else, so since it was his mom the pronoun took on the same type as the Mother’s. At least I believe it is something like that as I haven’t looked into the grammar rules and such myself but I have read enough poorly translated books to understand when it happens.
