Pity that mc think like an inexperienced and dumb teen. Though in some lives he died immediatly, in others he lasted over 12 years! Excluding the sleeping time he should have lived for over one century! The way in wich mc think and act is so different from his setting that it breaks the reader's immersion.

Deer doesn't taste like chicken. If you want something that taste close to bird meat you can try lizard/serpent meat (from an evolutive point of view they are pretty close, while deers are in a different line).
