It wasn't that his life was a mistake, he did learn many things. Through his whole journey he learned patience and he learned planning. He was meticulous yet bold. His personality was a bundle of contradiction, it was because he always knew how to act in which situation. He was a natural leader yet he always wanted to take matters into his own hands. Given that he was unable to learn any Swordsmanship, Ed was still relying on his throwing ability. He now knew magic and although Earth Shot was a nice spell his lacking control meant he was just throwing chunks of rock and dirt giving it limited lethality. He also planned on preserving as much mana as possible since Earth Dome was a very consuming spell. - BrianGallacher72dCommented

To put it simply, while others could simply send mana into their feet to infuse it with the ground, Ed would have to send it through the air. It isn't impossible, as a matter of fact, many spells depend on that function, but it was a method that met much resistance from the wind mana in the air. Although all of the elemental energies were ultimately mana, they still clashed and opposed each other. That is why it was common for inexperienced magicians to point towards the direction they would cast a spell, it led to less resistance. with someone who has had memories erased he has shown quite alot of intellectmy only issue so far is MC not making or finding back packs for his minions to carry more rocks
Ed was naturally not lying. Using his deduction skill along with his own intelligence he was able to quickly understand the theory behind spell casting and mana application.
