I get what you mean, however I enjoy gambling so I am ok with it. What I don't like is when you have this arbitrary system and the academy gets rewarded and praised as if their teachings were of any consequence. Let me suggest a better system, you have the awakening and then have competitions to show off how well you taught them to make use of their powers. and categorize by tiers so they are facing equal competition but similar tests would show off the people performing above their rank. (at least ones not pvp but fighting the environment or monsters)
