Well before he was her shadow, even before he was out in the forgotten shore, in the first scenes when he first saw her - he was mesmerized. For a boy out of the slums to see (literally) a princess probably pulled emotions he hadn’t felt before (particularly at an important teenage development age). I kinda forgot how frightful these nightmares can be. After all the swarms and hordes, sometimes facing a single entity on the scale of what Sunny Neph and Cassie had to back in the begging is much more terrifying (for them and readers).
