As It turns out Black Canary was to be my mentor. She was primarily responsible for getting me into shape and teaching me how to fight.
I was also informed that I would be getting another mentor to help me with the superpowers aspect since Dinah's sonic scream wasn't all that applicable to the unique set of powers I had.
For the forseeble future though, I would be primarily under Black Canary's tutelage.
I had just finished training and after a week of not hearing anything from Batman I decided to take matters into my own hands. I asked Dinah if she could ask Giovanni for a meeting since he was the league's magical expert.
It would give them a chance to make sure the talismans didn't have any unforseen side effects and it was an opportunity to pick the brain of one of the most powerful magicians on Earth.
After thinking about what happened with the Talismans getting stolen, I felt it prudent to look for a way to prevent this from happening again. I couldn't risk any talismans falling into the wrong hands.
A few days of awaiting passed before news of him agreeing to meet with me arrived. So, I was currently waiting for him in a small waiting room situated in the library.
A few minutes later a middle-aged man with green eyes, a prominent black mustache wearing a three layered suit, which consisted of a white shirt with a red bow-tie attached, over which there was a yellow vest, which was finally topped by a black blazer.
I immediately got up to shake his hand and introduced myself to him.
" Hello Mr. Zatara it's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Jason Blackwood also known as Zodiac." I said, with my hand extended.
He shook my hand, " Mr. Blackwood. It's nice to meet you. So, you're the one who has been giving Batman the run around for the past six months." He said, with some amusement.
I chuckled, " Guilty as charged. "
" I was told some of the league members had some concerns about my talismans. I've been using them for quite some time now and haven't noticed anything strange, but any insights you could give me on them would be appreciated." I said.
" I would certainly like a chance to take a look at them. Based on what I was told so far, they sound like powerful magical artifacts. " He said.
I zipped open my jacket and my hands went towards my belt. The belt had 12 slots in it. All occupied by the talismans.
I had asked Diana if she knew someplace I could commission for a belt that could securely hold my talismans. I told her I wanted to make sure they were close to me at all times and that it would be more convenient on emergencies.
She told me the league had resources of its own and that all I had to do was ask for it.
She pointed out that the league normally took care of supplying their members with gear and since I was currently on probation awaiting approval they could definitely have one made for me.
The belt was made out of tough and flexible materials primarily carbon fiber, it was also tear and fire resistant and had an unjustable size. It could comfortably house the talismans and after wearing it for a few days I quickly got used to it.
I removed my belt and laid the talismans in front of him. He gave them an interested once over and then gave me a look, asking for my permission to handle them.
Got to give it to him. It's a good habit to get into since you never know if an object is cursed or enchanted with a protection spell that will harm anyone but their user.
I gave him a slight nod and watched as his hands brushed over them. " Amazing to think something like this existed."
He began casting some spells and as he whispered those spells his eyes began to widen.
Eventually he moved on to me and did the same. His eyebrows were scrunched up in contemplation and after a few muttered words he spoke.
" I must say Mr. Blackwood it's been a long time since I have seen something like this."
" I hope all is well. Is something wrong with them or me for that matter?" I said.
"No Mr. Blackwood on the contrary. These talismans are actually seals for the powers contained within them. I suspect if released these powers will seek out a new holder."
I hummed, " That's quite interesting, do you know who they might choose?"
He shrugged," The only way to know for sure is to release one of them and observe where they go, and although I sense a connection between you and the Talismans it would be a risk I'm not willing to take. "
I nodded," Do you think you can come up with a method to track them down. They were almost stolen a week ago and I fear that one day they may fall into the wrong hands. "
" I'll see what I can do, but this may take some time. I have responsibilities to the league as well as my own work. But, I think I can come up with something. " He said.
I accquised, " Any help would be appreciated. Is there anything else I should know, are they safe?"
" I suppose so. I couldn't detect any elements of demonic powers. Somehow your body also seems to be adapting to their use and even resonating with them. You have a strong magical signature, not enough to be a mage but definitely above average for a human. "
" I've been using them practically everyday for the last 6 months, do you think that might have anything to do with it?" I asked.
An idea suddenly sprang to mind." Say is there a possibility the powers within these talismans can be transferred to a person?"
Seeing where I was going with this, he shook his head." It's too dangerous we don't know what could happen. "
" I see your point, but as you said. My body's been adapting to their magic. Maybe we could try and transfer one of them to myself and see what happens."
He still seemed unsure, so I pushed on.
" Mr. Zatara these talismans are my family's heritage and I almost lost some of them due to treachery and carelessness. I'm sure you can understand where I am coming from, I would imagine you would feel the same if someone tried to steal your family's heritage. All of this happened because I was powerless to do anything without them, if there is any chance I could insure they remain safe I'll take it. "
I picked one of them, and gave it to him.
"Please."
