Chapter 114: Civil War

A few minutes later, Mai and Mute could be seen walking next to each other in the thick snow. Mai glanced over at Mute before asking a question.

" What happened to my father? " 

" Oh, Ogi? I killed him, but if it makes you feel better. He did ask me to kill you instead of him, but I doubt you liked him. " 

Mai scoffed after hearing Mute's answer before she spoke once again.

"It's probably for the best that he died. You should have seen the leaders of the Zenin Clan when he asked to meet you personally. They questioned him if he had gone insane, but I do understand why my father would want to meet you. "

"Yeah, it was pretty bold of him to meet me, that's why I figured it was an ambush, but who will be next head? " 

" It'll most likely be Megumi, so it looks like the war between us Zenins happened for no reason, the war crippled our clan and all because my father wanted to be the next head of the clan, he should have known they would try to assassinate him eventually. "

Mai said while shaking her head. Mute looked over at Mai curious before he spoke asking a question. 

" They were trying to assassinate him? " 

" Indeed, they were trying to remove him mainly because no one liked him. Unlike Naobito who was a plain drunkard and fairly easy to reason with, my father is stubborn and hard-headed. He made the Zenin residence like a prison making sure that everyone who argued with him was killed. "

" So, he came running to me like a headless chicken after he learned that he was going to be assassinated? "

" Correct, the Zenin Clan paid a hefty price for Mei Mei to assassinate my father. She was meant to come tonight and kill him but you beat her to it. "

" Mei Mei, she would probably be livid if she found out, I killed her prey. "

Mute said with a chaotic grin etched onto his face... 

A day later, just outside the Zenin residence, the news of Ogi Zenin's death shocked the lower-ranking members of the clan intensely. However, the leaders of the clan seemed to be quite pleased with small grins hiding on their faces. 

The reason for this grin was simple. They didn't have to pay Mei Mei a dime for the death of Ogi Zenin. After hearing that Mute had killed Ogi Zenin they quickly canceled the request for Mei Mei's assassination. 

As the leaders of the Zenin Clan were cheery about Ogi's death, one of the members was not, that member being Maki Zenin who was currently staring at her phone worried. Mai had completely disappeared leaving not a single trace. Maki texted Mai to no avail, but she didn't receive a single text back. 

She repeatedly texted Mai's phone. Maki knew that her father had made her deliver a message to Mute and Maki assumed the worst. However, as she was pondering, her mind full of thoughts, the sound of hurried footsteps rapidly approached causing her to look to the right. 

Maki stared at a frail-looking Naoya Zenin who was breathing heavily. Maki contorted her face in disgust while staring at him before he abruptly spoke.

" D-Did you hear the news about Mai? " 

" What news are you talking about? "

Naoya took a deep breath before he yelled out. 

" She allied herself with Mute! "

This single sentence made Maki's heart drop, as she stared at Naoya's widened eyes. After a few seconds of being in pure shock, Maki just nodded her head at Naoya turned around, and started to walk away. 

Maki glared forward with her fists balled and veins popping out of her body. It was clear to Maki that Mute had to be holding her sister hostage. There was no way. Mai would never ally herself with Mute...

As this was happening, inside an inn in Tokyo, Mute and Mai could be seen sitting around a brown table playing spades. Mai played down 4 of spades, before she let out a loud sigh and spoke to Mute. 

" So, I understand that you want to fight the strongest, but what are you waiting for? If you really wanted to fight the strongest you would have gone and challenged Gojo again. "

" I can't. I'm waiting for something a little more interesting than fighting Gojo. "

Mai looked at Mute confused before she spoke asking a question. 

" Really? What are you waiting for?"

Mute just grinned before he spoke in a playful voice. 

" I can't tell you, it's a secret. "...
