Accidental Date

Maya frowned as she exited the lobby of DLR Enterprises' office.

Despite having achieved what she had come to the company for, she was still disappointed.

When Oliver left Maya asked Mr. Thomas if she could also apologize to the President and CEO since it was his company name that she had damaged. Unfortunately, Mr. Thomas rejected her request and told her that it was all settled.

Maya was so focused on the rejection bothering her, that she didn't hear a familiar voice calling her name.

"Maya!" someone grabbed Maya's arm, almost making her scream.

Luckily she noticed in time that it wasn't some random stranger, rather, it was Nate Rue.

"Nate," she gasped as she was pulled from her thoughts. "What are you doing here?"

Nate gave her a proud smile before replying.

"I applied for a job at DLR Enterprises and I got hired," he said, smiling from ear to ear.

'It must be hard for him to find a job,' Maya thought to herself, not wanting to offend Nate.

"Congratulations!" Maya said as she offered him a handshake.

Nate frowned but took what he could. It was clear to Maya that Nate wasn't stupid and knew he still had much to make up for.

"Why don't you celebrate with me, let's have lunch," Nate suggested with a hopeful look in his eyes.

Maya's smile suddenly vanished when Nate invited her out.

She wasn't ready to be alone with him again.

The last time was a disaster, her own emotions were betraying her. She understood that he had to leave, but leaving without telling her anything was what hurt the most.

She thought that there was something special, something deeper between the two of them, but when he left without even looking back, he shattered her heart.

"Nate, I have to get back to the office, I only took the morning off," Maya said as she tried to tell him no.

"It's only eleven, we have time," Nate said with a shrug. "I know you don't want to spend time with me. I'm sure you still hate me for what I did, but I want to make it up to you. Let me, please."

Maya looked into Nate's eyes and she could see how genuine he was.

"Nate—" Maya began to say when she heard an all too familiar voice.

"Maya!" Oliver called out, waving as he ran down the steps coming from the lobby of DLR Enterprises' office building.

"Ah, your fiance," Nate teased with a bitter tone.

"He isn't—" she said in an attempt to defend herself.

Unfortunately, Maya couldn't complete her statement because Oliver was already too near to them and would hear their argument.

"Oliver, shouldn't you be at work? Shouldn't you be working hard to prove Mr. Thomas wrong and earn back your place in the company?" Maya asked while Nate continued to keep his back to Oliver.

"I wouldn't stress about it, Maya," Oliver chuckled, his tone full of confidence. "It's just a slap on the wrist. In a few days, I'll be back in my position again, that's how life works."

Maya paled at his words, she didn't think a company like DLR Enterprises would be that foolish or corrupt.

"But it was Mr. Thomas who demoted you," Maya pointed out.

"And so?" Oliver asked in a mocking tone. "He's just an assistant Maya, compared to me he is no one. I'm sure his order will be reversed and he will be reprimanded."

"So overconfident," Nate scoffed as he turned to face Oliver. "Do you really think so little of your peers?"

Oliver glared as he realized who Maya had been talking to prior to his arrival.

"Nate Rue," Oliver spoke as if Nate's name was the most disgusting thing to leave his lips. "What are you doing here? Do I need to ask the guard to escort you out? This is private property, you are trespassing."

Maya gave Nate a worried look, for some reason, despite everything that had happened between them she still worried about Nate.

"Really. Oliver, do you own this place?" Nate confidently asked as he tilted his head to the side.

"No, but I'm an employee here. As a matter of fact, I'm quite highly ranked," Oliver boasted.

Maya rolled her eyes as Oliver mentioned that he was a highly-ranked employee, she hated it when he boasted.

"And what right do you have to send me away?" Nate questioned as a smile formed on his lips.

Maya couldn't help but notice that his expression was a striking contrast to the kind and wholesome image he had.

"You're not an employee of DLR Enterprises," Oliver confidently declared.

"I am, I got hired today," Nate answered back.

"As?" Oliver questioned as he tried to figure out it Nate was of any consequence to him.

"Finance Department Clerk," Nate said.

Oliver laughed and shook his head, his eyes quickly went to Maya as he decided to take advantage of the situation.

"Don't you see Maya, how lowly he is compared to me?" Oliver asked.

Maya was not happy with his words, she never liked it when Oliver belittled others.

"Be nice," She hissed.

"Why don't I treat you to lunch, Maya?" Oliver offered. "You're in this area so rarely, I'd like to spend time with you."

"I—I—" Maya looked to Nate as she desperately tried to find a way out.

She was not in the mood to spend time with Oliver.

"You?" Oliver asked as he tired to pressure her into having lunch with him.

Noticing Maya's distress, Nate decided to save her the only way he knew how.

"We have a date," Nate suddenly said, catching both Maya and Oliver off guard.

Oliver glared at Nate before looking back at Maya and confronting her.

"Did you really agree to go on a date with this idiot?" Oliver said in a rough voice.

"Yes, we have a date," Maya said, vigorously nodding. "Bye."

She might not have liked the idea, but she knew Nate wouldn't push him the way Oliver most likely would.

"Nate, let's go, we don't have a reservation so we might run out of seats," Maya said as she took Nate's hand in hers and pulled him away.

Behind them, Oliver stood stunned and defeated, at a loss for words over what had just happened.
