38 My Husband

" Well, guess he wasn't so about his vacation as he said. I mean he's already off to some fight again. He's just like Jeff. I can't put up with the promises. How do you do it, Donna? Lynn asked as Kai flew out of the house.

Donna's mouth twitched in anger, but the woman quickly calmed herself down. " What do you mean?"

" I mean, how is it you two get along so well with the whole hero thing. I mean doesn't it get lonely when your husband spends more time out there than with his own family?" Lynn asked.

" My husband does his best to provide for me and our son. My husband has experienced many travesties in his life and yet he still smiles brightly and still believes the world can be a better place. He has been beaten and disowned by those he was supposed to call his parents. He was assaulted in ways no man or woman should ever be. My husband has put his body and life on the line for this planet more times than I'd like but he does it so that no child will ever have to go through what he did. My husband has paid more visits to little children who write to him from hospitals than even Superman or Flash have." Donna explained to the woman

"My husband has battled demons and monsters that would make any man be they hero or villain shudder in fear. My husband puts the lives of his teammates and his proteges above his at all times. He has given his body to save them. My husband has seen all of me and accepted me for what I am. We have our arguments, yes. But my husband has never raised his voice against me in anger despite me doing it too him. And outside of training my husband has never raised his hand against me even when I know in my mind, I deserved it. I have made many mistakes and yet Kai has stood beside me. He stood by me and fought with me at my best and shielded me when I was at my worst. No matter what he has always stood beside me. He has been an amazing father to Jason, and I couldn't have asked for a better life partner. So, yes when time comes where my husband is needed, I let him go. Does it make me worry? Yes, absolutely. He is my husband, and I will never not worry when he is in danger. The thought of losing him pains me dearly. But if something happens and he could have stopped it, I know he'd blame himself to no end. It's foolish and idealistic, but honestly that optimism and that never give up attitude is exactly why I fell in love with him in the first place." Donna told the woman.

" Donna, I didn't mean... I wasn't trying to offend you or anything like that." Lynn told the woman.

" I know that, Lynn. I know you and Lightning didn't work out well. But do not presume to insert your own experiences with your ex on me and my husband. I love Kai for who he is and nothing will change that." Donna stated bluntly. She then looked down and kissed Jason on his forehead. " And I love you, sweetheart. So, very much."

Jason smiled and giggled as he looked up at his mother.

Donna then turned her attention towards the sky. ' Be careful sweety. Please, come back to us.'

As Kai flew towards Nightwing's location a sudden feeling caused him to stop and look back towards his family's direction. Kai smiled and then resumed his flight towards the battlefield. "Don't worry, Donna. I'll be back before you know it. Just wait for me my love." Kai exclaimed aloud.

Even though she was unable to hear him, Donna knew what Kai had said, even being thousands of miles apart their bond could not be disrupted.
