Elizabeth's eyes were fixed on her cracked laptop's screen, she tapped a few things with shaky hands and hardly blinked. She sat in her room with its doors closed. She's used to being heartbroken when checking whether she got into college or not. But she still feels tensed.
She logged into the college's portal and before she knew what was going on she realized she would soon find out her destiny in just a click. Before she clicked, she gulped down saliva to ease her dried up throat, sweat trickled down her face despite the open windows blowing in a wonderful summer breeze. The calm breeze blew her red hair but she is still sweating. Her eyes peered at the screen and she involuntarily moved herself to click and she clicked. She didn't close her eyes, she read what the screen has to say about the next step of her life. Her eyes went from end to end...
"Dear, Miss. Elizabeth Ben…" she quickly looked away from the salutation. She doesn't want salutations, if she wanted that she would bully her younger brother to salute her. She skipped whatever she saw next with her eyes searching for the main information.
'We wish to congratulate you on your acceptance into…' she whispered as her mind read. She did not finish the sentence, she got the information she wanted.
"EHHHHHHH!" she exclaimed in immense joy. She quickly got up from her chair and jumped all alone in her room as she yelled and celebrated.
"Elizabeth what is all that noise for? The neighbors will complain" Elizabeth's mom's muffled voice said. Elizabeth quickly made to open the door for her mom so she would tell her the good news. Her hands touched the door knob but she stopped and turned to look at her laptop. She didn't finish reading the sentence, what if it said something else and she didn't get in? She quickly let go of the knob and went back to her laptop. How big of a fool she would look like if she made her family celebrate for something she didn't confirm.
"Open this door!" her mom's voice ordered.
"Coming mom" Elizabeth said with her eyes scanning the sentence all over again. When she was done confirming she quickly ran to the door and opened it up for her mom. She quickly embraced her mom who had a spatula in her hand and smelled like lasagna. Before her mom got a chance to ask what had happened Elizabeth told her.
"I got into College mom" she said releasing her mom from her tight embrace. "What?" her mom asked surprisingly and embraced her again. Her mom quickly walked into the room and stood in front of the laptop.
"Read it to my hearing" Her mom said. Mrs. Benson wasn't opportune to be educated while she was young but she's trying now, thanks to her kids. Elizabeth read it to her mom with a smile on her face.
"Finally!" Mrs. Benson said with a smile on her face. "I give God the glory" her mom added with her hands facing the ceiling.
"I get to leave for college mom, imagine me being an engineer" Elizabeth said with a smile as she looked out the window already fantasizing.
"I wonder why a woman would have so much passion for something so masculine" Mrs. Benson teased as she walked out of the room to the kitchen.
"Don't be misogynistic mom, you're a woman…"
"…Uphold your gender" Mrs. Benson said completing Elizabeth's sentence. She's familiar with it. Elizabeth laughed at her mom as she sat on the kitchen stool and watched her mom work.
"I have a few houses I need you attend to before the end of the day" Mrs. Benson said to Elizabeth. Elizabeth helps her mom with her job of cleaning houses, but her mom sends her to attend to a few houses at the wrong time.
"Mom. I just got accepted into college" Elizabeth wailed.
"Yes, and you need tuition fees. So you better get going before it get's late" her mom pushed her, 'I'll feed you when you get back' her mom added.
'But if Maxwell returns from high school before you do and he clears all the meal. Then you can't blame me'.
Elizabeth pleaded with her mom but her mom stood her ground. Elizabeth finally left to get the work done. One of the houses she's suppose to clean belongs to the parents of her high school boyfriend, Jaden. A black haired, rich high school senior. Because he's rich doesn't mean he's popular. He's one of those rich kids who don't have much recognition which is one thing Elizabeth likes about Jaden. At least she won't be scared of some stupid cheerleader trying to hit on her man. She slowly starts remembering how her ex, a college fresher was cheating on her with another college student. It hurt her a lot, and she finally got together with Jaden because he seems kinda naïve and he's always seemed to have a crush on her. She used the good news of getting into college to clear her head off any negative thought. She did her job and found her way back home.
When she got home it was quite late, she was tired and all she needs is a shower and rest. She walked to the kitchen and luckily the lasagna still remained. That glutton Maxwell did not devour the whole thing.
