The default settings of most phone camera apps are usually suboptimal. The pictures are taken at a lower resolution and also cropped to fill the screen. Make sure the photos you are taking are in 4:3 format. You can always crop the photos later. Also, make sure to increase the resolution of your photos (as long as you don't mind using more storage space).
