Chapter 14
Saturday, Dan was off with the cowboys moving stock to higher ranges up in the Gila Mountains. Although a couple of men were still at the ranch, irrigating the alfalfa and repairing some cross fences, the place seemed eerily quiet. He didn’t even hear Juanita moving around inside.
After lunch, he realized some more boards he needed were still in the barn. It took him two trips to carry them over. He probably could have used Ben’s old pickup for the job, but with loading and unloading, it wouldn’t have gone much faster. He’d left the southern bay door open while he worked. Although summer was several weeks away, the temperatures were climbing fast and it got pretty stuffy inthe garage.
