Prologue
Yfilios. That's 'world' in Greek and that's the name of the island the story is
about.
Perra, the butterfly goddess, created the humans, the butterflies, the phoenixes
and the animals.
On the island Yfilios there is only one human kingdom. The country is called
Meraki. The one above the royal family is the butterfly queen, Mierra.
Every year, a trial from the queen herself is held for the humans. The winner
gets to fulfill one wish. The losers don't get anything from the queen, but they
get something from the king. If you are one of those who was fighting in the last
trial, then you'll get a chance of being invited into the royal army.
Not everyone can participate in the trials. Only those chosen by the magic
butterflies get to participate. But the reason the butterfly choses someone
depends on the butterfly. It cab chose you because you're strong or just because
it likes your appearance. But being chosen only gives you a chance to
participate, it doesn't guarantee anything. Even your life could be in danger at
the trials. It's your choice to participate or not if you are chosen.
The girl, Uri Vermillion, who can see spirits, has a wish that is more than
unique. Will she be chosen or not, will she get the chance to know the truth?
Chapter 1
On December 15 1326 of the Lyrin calendar my village was destroyed. I was born on February 17 in 1317 in the village of the Ignis tribe. My tribe has
a special trait that everyone has, except for me. Every person of my tribe is born
with red hair and red eyes and has fire magic, while I was born with grey eyes.
Even my twin brother has red eyes. But that was never a thing I had to be sad
for, the people of my village were always kind and accepted me with open arms.
Because of our special traits we sometimes get attacked, so we always keep an
emergency bag to run away as quickly as possible.
When I was about to turn ten something unexpected happened. On that day my
brother went missing. I was helping my mom wash the clothes when we heard a
shriek coming from the village. We ran as fast as we could back home, but
when we arrived the village was already burning. The fire was as black as the
darkness of hell. There was nothing to be done at that moment, especially by the
young me who was trembling of fear. I saw men in black robes murder every
one of my friends and family. In an instant my mother appeared before me and
gave me the emergency bag. With a face full of tears she held me tight and
ordered to run as fast as I can into the woods. "I'll catch up," she said. That was
a lie. While running I only turned once and in that one glimpse I saw my twin
brother, Uriel, standing alongside the unknown men who were murdering my
mother. He stood there with a face without any soul to be seen. That is the
moment I want to forget the most in my entire life.
That day I hid myself in the woods and waited until it was nightfall to continue
my journey. My eyes that were a different color, had a special ability. I could
see at night as if it were day. I continued to walk through the woods without
knowing what to do. I had lost everything that was dear to me and didn't know
what to live for. I just walked as far as I could as my mother ordered me to.
When the sunrise came I fell. I fell asleep, in the middle of the woods.
The next morning I woke up in a warm bed in an unfamiliar house. I heard a
noise outside and hid myself under the blanket. Someone came in. When I
peeked from the opening of the blanket I saw an old woman with a kind look on
her face.
"Don't be scared. You slept for a whole day, so you must be pretty hungry. Eat
this soup while it's warm," said the woman with a kind voice and brought a
bowl of soup near the bed.
The smell was amazing. Without thinking I came out from under the blanket
and started eating the soup. It was so delicious that I thought of my family and
started crying while still eating the soup. The old woman looked at me with
kind eyes and smiled. "Don't haste, I have more."
After finishing eating and wiping off my tears I sat down and looked at the
woman. Then she started talking:
"Me and my husband live in these woods. On our daily morning walk we found
you laying on the ground unconscious. We brought you here to help you
recover. You are free to go wherever you want, but you are also free to stay
with us."
After hearing those words I started crying again and the woman came to sit next
to me and hugged me tight. While sobbing in her shirt I uttered: "Can I really
stay here, Grandma? Won't I be a bother?"
After hearing those words the old woman let a few tears slip and said: "Of
course, my girl. We will be more than happy to have another family member.
We can teach you many things. Welcome to the family."
I was truly happy that I could stay. Later I was told that the elderly couple
didn't have children and were really happy to receive me in their family. From
that day on I started calling them Grandma and Grandpa.
I learned a lot of things while living there. Like hunting or surviving in the wild.
I also learned to control my fire powers a little. And my eyes, I learned one
other special trait of them. I can see a spirit. Not spirits, but only one. His name
is Nero, he is my friend. Nero looks like a blue ball with cat ears and a cat tail.
He really likes to talk and to tease me. Only I can see him, but Grandma and
Grandpa can sense his presence, so they also know when he is with us.
After five years I decided to leave for the capital. My goal became to uncover
the truth of the attack on my village and to avenge my family, and to find out
what happened with my brother. I am going for my journey with my two short
swords and a dagger as weapons, my emergency bag and my friend Nero.
