CHAPTER 2

sitting on her wooden chair trying to stay awake while trying to read the books on top of her wooden locker. It had been an hectic day, but no day went by that Dawn wouldn't atleast read two to three pages out of her notes. it was a tradition she was already accustomed to.

'i need to stay awake'

she said as she patted her checks to keep her from zoning out again. Reading her notes was very important to her, because being a poor girl the only way she could reach great heights was to be focused and to study hard. Dawn is the best in her grade and also quite a beauty, very polite, kind and caring, everyone In school just adores her. But who wouldn't adore someone like her.

She buried her face in the literature textbook she borrowed from one of her friend at school and started reading it when she heard the sound of the front door opening, she checked the time on her electronic watch 11:00pm. She knew Instantly that it was her dad that came in, atleast he came home. Dawn's house wasn't a very big house, it only had three rooms a small sitting area and a small kitchen which can barely contain 4 people at once.

she got up and decided to greet her dad, maybe showing him unconditional love and care would make him come back to his senses is what she thought. She left her room and headed for the sitting room, a passage was right after her room which lead to the sitting room. she surrepitiously tiptoed to surprise her dear Dad, when she heard her mom and her dad talking.

'oh they are busy, I guess I will come back later'

"where were you for 4 good days, we were worried sick about you!"

she heard her mother say this and decided to hold on a bit and hear what's gonna happen next.

"Don't bother me woman, you should be grateful I even came home at all"

"what! how can you say that with so much confidence, how dare you. All I've ever done was be there for you when u needed me, but now that things are starting to turn out great u forgot about me, and your daughter!!"

Hearing this made Dawn's heartache, she hated what her father was doing, she hated the fact that he kept hurting her mom, she peeked through the curtain and say tears drop from her mother's eyes.

"Don't start with that bulsh*t tonight, am way too tired to put up with this"

"sob Just tell me what I did wrong...sobs .... just let me know where I made a mistake and I will apologize immediately, but please please don't hurt me like this anymore, it pains too much.i feel suffocating Everytime I think of you leaving me, don't do this James"

seeing this completely shattered Dawn's heart to pieces, in all the years she had known her mom she has never saw her in this state before.

She placed her hand on her mouth to prevent any sound she was making while crying for her mother.

"hehe, are u seriously crying. How pathetic, move aside I need to get some sleep"

'what! how could he be so cruel to mom, what has happened to dad'

it was in this moment that Dawn knew her dad was gone and this man standing right here was no longer her dad, but a monster and she resented him.

James pushed Evelyn to the side to make a way for him, in the process she fell down, Dawn couldn't hide the fact that she was listening to their conversation, she couldn't bear to see her mom in that state.

seeing her mom fall on the floor she shouted "mom" and rushed to her. Her father expressionless and drink chuckled.

"my dear daughter, don't be like your mother and go to bed, it's quite late"

Her father said staggering to her, he held her by the arm and picked her up from the ground, away from her mother.

"James what are you doing, just let her go"

"Dad!"

James didn't want to hear anything they had to say he forcefully took Dawn to her room. and locked the door.

'Was he going to hit her mom again, I thought he changed. God please save my mom" was the only thing she could think of when her father pushed her in and locked the door on her. She banged on the door pleading for her father to let her out.

"Dad please, please, don't hurt her"

tears rolled down her eyes, because what was about to happen next was something she had witnessed couple of times but felt all the same terrible. Since her dad started having flings, he would hit her mom once he is completely drunk and out of it. Was this still love, why can't her mother file a case or leave him, why must she have to go through all this all In the name of love.

"Hey woman see what you did, you made me look bad in front of my daughter, now am going to teach you a lesson"

the only thing Dawn heard next was screams of pain and agony, she couldn't bear to hear her mom that way, she burst into tears without realising and slumped on the floor wishing she never had a dad...
