20 The Doctor is In

When the time for the appointment came Daisy was slightly put off at the receptionist's blatant flirting with her husband. What was worst was that Tom was encouraging her. The twinkle in his eyes as he looked at her made her realize that he was enjoying making her jealous. Jealousy was not something that Daisy was familiar with. None of her relationships had lasted to that stage where she could be jealous and yet here she was.

'Are you done ogling my husband?' she finally decided to speak.

'Come on Daisy', It was Tom who spoke. Daisy looked up at the smug grin on his face through hooded eyes, her irritation showing clearly on her face. 'When I am in your place and I notice someone ogling you, my heart soars with pride knowing that I have what others desire. Why not see it as a compliment.' He replied in not so a quiet voice. The girl, in question, was flustered and beet red in the face. She was embarrassed beyond doubt and it was clear that it was Tom's intention that she should remember her embarrassment and desist from ogling other married men. Just then there was a buzz in the intercom. Daisy watched as a couple walked out of an opening door, tears streaming down. She wondered what kind of news they had received to brought the woman to tears and the man beside her to concern.

'Let's go, Daisy. The moment of truth is here.' Tom said guiding her to the now closed door. He held it open for her to enter and he followed on her tails.

'Hello doctor' Daisy greeted the man in the white medical coat she had earlier encountered in quite a different circumstance.

'You can call me Andrew. Tom and I went to the same school, so it is only fitting that you call me by name. Tom has briefed me on the arrangement you had and the alterations that have taken place in your arrangement and I think it is for the best. IVF is better saved as a last resort for the better health of the child.' Andrew summarized.

Daisy looked to the ground in embarrassment realizing that Tom had told their doctor about their sex life even before their appointment. When did he do it? Did he do it over the phone or do they meet outside to discuss?

'Gym. We met in the gym day before yesterday when I briefed him the situation so that you wouldn't have to explain it.' Tom whispered in her ears. Again she marvelled at his perceptiveness.

'I don't have much to check today. I will give you a set of tests for the both of you that you need to get done. I want you to report to me within a week. Also, when did you last menstruate? ' Andrew asked matter of factly.

'It was before the wedding.' Daisy recalled.

'It was during the time I skipped Frederick's stripper party.' Tom explained.

Daisy was shocked for two reasons. She never mentioned her last menstrual cycle to Tom and she never knew of any stripper party.

'It wasn't hard to deduce that you were menstruating the day Mallory visited you because of your bad mood and also because I may have seen some tampons lying scattered beside your bag of toiletries, which meant that they were being used.' Tom explained.

Daisy was at a loss for words. It was Andrew who spoke to break the silence. 'You will get used to it. It happens a lot to us. He is very hard to surprise and he doesn't take too well to surprises. Hence the episode when he found out you bought a wedding gown. Thankfully it was put to good use.'

'I guess I lucked out when it comes to matrimony. I never imagined getting married and I have a great husband who is also a wonderful friend to me.' Daisy voiced.

'Then I guess we better get going. We will report back to you with all the tests.' Tom said.

'Yes and also keep trying for the baby. It's been two weeks since her last cycle and she should be fertile now. This is the ideal time for conceiving.' Andrew told Tom, giving him a pointed look. Tom pressed his lips together to keep himself from grinning. Even without the instigation from Andrew, he was doing his best to get Daisy pregnant. It would ensure that she would stick to him and he needed her more than she would ever know. She was his only family and his only home.

Tom nodded and got up to go. Daisy was getting up. 'Daisy' Andrew interrupted. 'Can I speak to you in private for a minuter?' Andrew requested. Daisy looked up and saw a worried look on Tom's face.

'It's nothing to worry about Tom. I am not stealing your wife. I am happily married.' he joked but Daisy could sense something was bothering him.

'I will be right behind you. Just give us a second.' she said.

As Tom left closing the door behind him Daisy turned to Andrew, worry clearly written on her face.

'You need to tell him.' he said.

'I need to tell him what?' Daisy asked perplexed.

'Despite the doctor-patient confidentiality, Julia is my wife and Tom is my close friends. Tom is desperate to get you pregnant so that you wouldn't leave him. He is madly in love with you but he is in denial. He thinks he is unworthy and incapable of love. You need to tell him your true feelings for him. It is written clearly in your eyes that you adore him. All you need to do is tell him that you love him and you have no idea how happy he will be. He may take a while in saying it back to you because you will have to convince him that he deserves your love but when he sees it that way he would be better equipped to deal with his demons.' Andrew explained in hushed whispers.

'I don't want to tie him down for good if I can't make him happy. He is excited by an idea. What if I can't make it real.' Daisy confessed.

'You are talking about the baby, right? Firstly, when I told you that it was peak time for you to consider a family it was because Ella had informed me that you were apprehensive of relationships and you needed an extra push. You are at the ideal age for starting a family. So that shouldn't be a concern for you. However, what is most important is that you were looking for a sperm donor. Tom wasn't looking to have a baby. If anything he believed that his bloodline shouldn't survive beyond him.

'His father was a Catholic priest and his mother was a prostitute. His father couldn't own up to what he did and so made up a story that he was possessed by the Devil when he impregnated Tom's mother and that is how he came to be. Tom's mother had just committed suicide and Tom wasn't in a stable state at that point in time. The story stuck to his sub-conscience and he started believing himself to be a demon. You were the first person that made him feel human and the first time I even heard him talk about a baby was when he declared at your wedding. So you see all you need to do to make him happy is be yourself, be someone who accepts him and becomes his home.

Now I think Tom is pacing outside believing that I am trying to seduce you. Just tell him that I was discussing the case of your friend Ella with you and how you are not at as much risk as Ella was with her POS and Diabetes.

Daisy nodded and walked out of the door to find a very worried Tom pacing the hallway.

'What did he say?' Tom asked worriedly.

Daisy smiled at how right Andrew was. 'He was talking about my friend Ella who passed away while having a baby. Apparently, I do not run the same risks she does. I am glad to hear it. I was a bit worried because Ella was just a couple of years older than me.'

Tom nodded and brought Daisy in for a hug. Daisy garnered that it was as good a time as any and heeded Andrew's advice. 'I love you, Tom. I don't want to leave you any day soon.' she confessed. Daisy felt the hug slacken and Tom took a step back to take a look at her face. When he was satisfied that she wasn't joking or sarcastic an expression of gratitude covered his face. He shook his head and walked forward with bowed head. Daisy's heart thudded in her chest wondering what was going in his mind. Only after taking a good six feet forward did Tom look back.

'Aren't you coming home, Daisy? We have a baby to make.' Tom said with a smile lighting up his face.

Tears stung her eyes as Daisy nodded and hurried behind him.
