Chapter 29

“If you hurt him, I won’t be held responsible for my actions!” I glared down at Archer.

“I’m trying to help your damn cousin!” Archer snapped at me, and I was about to tell him that Mathew isn’t my cousin, when he added, “Get the damn truck going!”

I turned and began to race back towards the car park. Everything else that had happened was suddenly gone from my mind, and all I could think about was getting to the truck and getting the engine started.

I ran as fast as my shaking legs would carry me and practically threw myself into the driver’s seat as soon as I managed to unlock the truck.

My hands were trembling so violently that it took me a few tries to get the key in the ignition but as soon as I did, I slammed my foot down on the clutch and turned it. The truck roared to life and I sent a silent prayer of thanks to Pete, who’d taught me how to turn on a car even though I was still way too young to actually drive.
