1 Prologue

Esterorth was a world that was once filled with the fires of war when humans fought against other humans. That period of time was called the age of mercenaries. The mercenaries of that age were powerful individuals that fought for money and glory. Among those were a few truly invincible individuals the SS rank mercs.

In an age that were filled with tanks, jets, guns, and other powerful weapons, the SS rank mercs, were beings that decided how powerful a country was. If you had an SS rank merc in your country you would be able to win a war without fighting if faced against another country who had none.

Usually, there would be one SS rank merc in a generation, most of the time there were none. But at the last stages of the age of Mercenaries, three SS rank mercs were alive at the same time. These three represented the most powerful nations of the time, the Granado Empire, Berdonia, and the Southern Union.

Arthur Glory the SS rank merc of the Southern Union. He was the oldest living merc at the time. He gained his rank of SS with nothing but his bare hands. He gained the SS rank at the age of fifty and kept it until the day he died in battle. He fell in the war against the Granado Empire at the age of a hundred and seventy years old.

Rika Saunter the SS rank merc of the Granado Empire. She is said to be the most powerful human to have ever existed. She was a being that grew stronger by merely existing. She didn't need to train since she was already powerful since birth. She was the only SS rank merc to have survived the change.

The final SS rank merc was from Berdonia. He is the one regarded by many as the greatest mercenary to have ever lived, Lyner Resteti. He who tried to find a way to die a glorious death was a man that was able to save many. His final battle was with Rika Saunter, those who witnessed that fight knew that he was the victor, but as the battle was near its end Lyner used his life to save an innocent child.

Even in the end, he embodied the very ideal that mercs were supposed to follow, a good merc gives as much as he's paid. Lyner who was paid to protect Berdonia protected it and its citizens until his dying breath.

Sixteen years have passed since the end of the age of Mercenaries, now it was a new age called by many as the age of Hunters. After the change that was caused by a madman, the modern world turned into a fantasy world. It was now a world filled with monsters that nearly wiped out humanity.

In this world, humans weren't as helpless as one might think against the monsters. As the world changed so did the humans.

In this new world, there were four categories of humans. The first type were the ability users, these people had gained a one of a kind ability and even though they can only use this one ability, compared to the other types of humans they are the top in terms of pure firepower.

The second type were the magic users. These people have gained the ability to control a new form of power within the human body, which scientists called terrenam potestatem, but the masses called it mana. Unlike the ability users, the magic users could use a wider array of skills. Though their power was lacking, they made up for it in versatility.

The third type were called the hybrids. These people were very rare, and they possessed both the qualities of the ability users and magic users. Among the four types, they are considered to have the greatest basic advantages.

The fourth and last type were called the unchanged. These were the people who were unfortunate enough to gain no ability. They remained almost the same as the humans before. The only difference was that they were slightly stronger than the old humans. Old humans are what the new generation calls the humans before the change.

In this new world, there were no longer any mercenaries as the Mercenary System has been abolished. The one that replaced them were the so-called Hunters. Unlike Mercenaries, Hunters were supported greatly by the government, and they had a stable income. They also function as the military, and they were also considered one of the top jobs everyone wanted to have. The Police force was the only other job that could match up to the hype of the Hunter job.

Seeing as these were the only two jobs that would allow a frequent use of one's abilities, many young people have these two jobs as their dream jobs. Of course, those of the older generation that weren't soldiers or mercenaries, but had experienced the previous world which was full of war, these people weren't really eager in doing jobs that could get them killed.

Seeing as Hunters and Police officers needed to be trained using the new abilities of humanity, a new type of school was created for people who want to strive for this career path. Once one finishes grade school and middle school, the child is given a choice to continue to go to a normal school, or a specialized school for Hunters and Police Officers.
