A daunting chess game

"I just feel like this was too easy. Mr.

Galvin is a genius he must have known we were on to him. Why didn't he HUD his money? It makes no sense." Edward says to the cheif. "He made a mistake and we

capitalized on it. Its what we do. That's proof that time catches up with everyone, it doesn't matter how smart

they are." The chief reassured Edward. "You did a great job Edward. A true detective you are. You deserve a rest. Am sure Frank can finish up here. Go

home and rest, you earned it." "Thank you sir." Edward hesitated to respond having in his mind that something was very wrong. Yet his tiredness left him no choice but to accept the chiefs orders. Edward said his goodbyes to Frank

and set out for his home. Even as he walked along the road he still believed there was

more to the case than what had been unveiled. Only

five minutes after he left the police station he got a call from Frank. "Good news Edward, the men that we have in Swiss custody just confessed. All of Mr. Galvin's property has been repossessed by the respective governments that control them. It's a great win for today Edward. And we owe it all to you. You really are a wonder to behold. Enjoy the rest of

your day off." Frank said and hung up instantly without letting Edward utter a single word.

Edward now even more perplexed than he previously was. Yet, calm as he usually is, he continues his walk still having a spot of trouble on his face. He eventually

reaches his house opens the door and immediately

notices something is wrong. He closes the door behind him and takes a long look at the decorations on the wall which clearly looks to have been tilted and thus tempered with. He stood there now processing his thoughts. He finally got a smirk on the right side of his

cheek. "Mr. Galvin. We meet again!" Edward shouts expecting Mr. Galvin to come out of hiding but to no avail. Nearly ten seconds pass as Edward stands still expecting Mr. Galvin. Edward realises he must be wrong and makes his way to the sofa to get some rest. As soon as he takes his seat, he hears a voice from behind him saying, "Care for a game of chess Mr. Smart?" Its Mr. Galvin. "How splendid of you to finally unveil yourself. Yes I would be more than happy to play with you." Edward replies. "Are you not scared that am hear to kill you Mr. Smart?" Mr. Galvin asks. "If you wanted me dead, I would be dead by now. Wouldn't I? Now take your seat am playing the black pieces." Edward says. "You are in the mood to defend Mr. Smart." Mr. Galvin says. "You are the aggressor

after all. You have been pulling all the strings my job is just to figure out what you are planning and stop it

before you can carry it out." Edward says staring straight at Mr. Galvin. "It seems you are speaking

about far more than chess my friend." "Why don't we play now. Its your move.

Mr. Galvin smiles at Edward and plays pawn to e4. Edward immediately plays his pawn to e5. The two

now play the sequence;

Kf3….Kc6, Bc4...Bc5, O-O-O.....Kf6, d4….e×d4, e5….d5, e×f6…..dxc4, Re1#...Be6, Kg5….Qd5, Kc3….Qf5, fxg7….Rg1, Ke4….O-O-O, g4….Qd5, Kf6…Qd6, Ke5….Qd5, Kf6…Qd6, Ke5….Qd5,

Kf6…Qd6, Ke5….Qd5, Kf6…Qd6.

"Shall we call it a draw." Mr. Galvin says with a smile on his face. "But you can just take the rook and you're winning the game. Why would you settle for a draw?"

Edward asked with some perplexity as to what had just

transpired. "Winning is not the most important part of the game Mr. Smart. Have a good rest of your day. See you soon Edward." Mr. Galvin said rather satisfied and saw himself out before Edward could utter a single word in reply.

Mr. Galvin closed the door behind him as he left. Edward was left in a rather dystopian brouhaha. He knew that Mr. Galvin hadn't visited him by mere

chance. There was a meaning behind everything that happened. But what?Edward thought to himself. He stayed motionless in the living room for nearly thirty minutes. Then a knock at the door. Who could that be?

Edward must have thought since he stared at the door

without giving a reply the first time round. Only the second knock got a response from the puzzled detective. "Come in." the detective shouted so as to be heard. It was Frank. Edward looked at his face and immediately realized that this was not good news.

Edward already downhearted and deep in thought asked Frank to take a seat opposite him and set the board for a game of chess before he delivered the news to him.
