“Your friends are nice,” Joe said. “Thanks for bringing me.”
“So not as bad as you thought it was going to be?”
“No. And…I’m sorry for that. I was just nervous.”
“Well, for what it’s worth, they really liked you, too.”
“Good. I’m glad. That’s…easier.”
It was a curious statement, and Joe didn’t elaborate. “What do you mean?”
“To feel like I fit in.”
“You did more than fit in. If either Natalie or Maren swung that way, they would’ve been all over you.”
Joe’s step faltered, slowing enough to draw Fess’s attention back up to him. “You don’t have to do that.”
“Do what?”
“Try and make me feel better about myself.”
“I’m not. I’m stating facts. Natalie’s convinced you’d make a fortune doing voice work.”
“But I’m already on the radio.”
