Assignment One Part Seven

"Well, I still have a few minutes before dinner is ready." Helen said. "Why don't you and Fey go outside while I prepare."

"Alright." Dax said. "Come on Fey."

Dax and Fey went outside.

"Your parents seem nice." Fey said, taking a seat on a stone flower bed that Dax's family had as decoration in their yard. She crossed her legs for comfort. "Nothing like mine at all."

Dax took a seat on another flower bed across from her. "Your dad seemed nice." He replied.

"He is." Fey said. "Sadly, I don't see him much. He is always busy with work. I don't know if that's because he is just busy, or because he wants to stay away from my mother. The woman treats him like a possession. As if he was just another one of her conquests in life. I swear the woman is insufferable." Fey paused. "Your mom seems nice though."

"Yeah." Dax said. "She keeps the family together."

"So, what were their classes in the academy?" Fey asked.

"My dad was in C class." Dax explained. "So, my mom was probably in C class as well, probably why I have never seen them do anything spectacular."

"Both of mine are S class." Fey said with a sigh. "Now I am too…"

"I think you are the only person upset about being the best." Dax said with a small laugh.

"I am the only one with my mother." Fey said. "I kind of wish I would have had a sibling. Then at least I would have one person that understood my pain."

There was an awkward silence for a couple of minutes after Fey's last statement. Neither of them had the slightest idea what to say next.

"So, my dad taught me this." Fey said, forming a small orb of lightning in her palm.

"You can already cast spells?!" Dax yelled in excitement. "That is amazing!"

Fey sighed deeply. "I know… mother is going to be so proud… damn dad being such a good teacher. Which was surprising honestly. I didn't think he had it in him."

"Maybe you are just a quick study." Dax said.

"I am pretty awesome." Fey cracked a smile.

"Dinner is ready!" Helen yelled out the window.

"Coming mom!" Dax yelled as he jumped up.

Fey jumped down as well and the two of them went inside to find that the table was already set, and Frank was sitting at the head of the table.

Dax and Fey choose seats across from one another and Helen brought them each a plate.

"Thanks." Dax said. "It looks delicious."

"It does!" Fey said excitedly. "The only food I ever get to eat is prepared by fancy chefs that get a little too obsessed with their abstract presentation. It is refreshing to eat something that resembles food for once."

"Your family must be quite rich then." Frank said. "Chefs with such eccentric taste can be quite expensive."

"Oh, yeah." Fey said. "Mother is the CEO of Nantex, so money is something we have a lot of."

"I see." Frank said. "Do your best Dax."

"What's that supposed to mean?!" Dax asked.

Frank did not answer, only giving his son a wink and a thumbs up instead.

"Dear don't tease our son." Helen said. "He has had a rough day." She turned her attention to Fey. "So, are you in class F as well?"

"Class S actually." Fey said, before taking another bite of food.

"I see." Helen said. "And you still wish to be friends with our Dax?"

"Yeah, why would class even matter?" Fey said. "Daxy is good people."

"I am not buying that." Helen said. "What is the real reason you are friendly with our son?"

"Helen!" Frank said, "Don't be mean to our guest."

"She wants to use me to disappoint her mother." Dax explained.

Frank's eyes lit up and he gave his son another thumbs up. "Be the best disappointment you can, son!"

Helen picked up a piece of food and hurled it at her husband's head. He narrowly dodged and the food hit the wall behind him. She threw it with such force that it put a hole in the wall.

"This is true?" Helen asked, looking directly at Fey.

"It is." Fey replied. "I do want to use his status as F class to disappoint my mother, but that isn't all. I genuinely think he is a good person and that he would make an interesting friend. Especially after all the crazy stuff that happened today."

"Dax, it is your decision on what friends to keep." Helen said. "If you are fine with this girl's reasons then they are fine with me. Just do me a favor and ignore anything your father suggests about your relationship with her."

Fey laughed. "I wish I had a family like this." She said, smiling. "I didn't think they actually existed."

"Keep that desire young lady!" Frank said, still ducking his head down.

"Well, it is getting late." Fey said. "Dad requested I return home before dark, so I need to go ahead and leave."

"Do you want to hunt for the slime tomorrow?" Dax asked.

"Sure." Fey said. "I'll come here in the morning."

"I can come to you if you want." Dax said.

"No, not yet." Fey said. "My mother, could do something unforgivable if you show up before I have had the proper time to prepare."

"That sounds terrible." Dax said. "Alright see you in the morning then."

"It's a date." Fey said with a smile. "Thank you for the delicious meal." With that she stood up and walked out of the house.

"Dax, you should have walked her out." Helen said. "It is only proper to see your guests out."

"Sorry mom." Dax said. "I will remember next time."

"Please do." Helen said. "I don't want anyone to accuse me of raising a mannerless man."

"Well dinner was good." Dax said.

"I will clean up." Helen said. "I need to speak with your father, run on to your room. Let us know if you have any more nightmares."

"I will." Dax said.
