18 In the Bank But Still Work to Do

The bank lady took a look at her card and then asked her for her papers.

She slowly flipped through the official looking documents as she verified whether the person on the form was indeed Feng Jiao. She thus, looked at Feng Jiao and then back into the sheet.

"Do you have an ID card on you? Your picture must've been taken when you were quite young, dear customer." the bank lady tried to be as polite as possible, but what she meant was more along the lines of 'you look nothing like your picture, give me an ID or I'm calling the cops.'

This was obviously something she could not do without getting into trouble so the bank lady was polite instead. She looked at the ID still hanging around Feng Jiao's neck inquisitively.

"Your school ID will do too. It doesn't have to be a government issued ID." the bank lady said before she bowed her head again and went back to typing in some details for some other customer.

Feng Jiao pulled out her government employee ID instead.

Every government employee had one, and it allowed the holder to enjoy some perks that normal people wouldn't be allowed to enjoy.

The card would usually mention the rank and role of the person who held the card, but that wasn't very safe for people in the military or people who had high security roles.

Like Feng Jiao.

Thus, the code names on those would either not be mentioned, in the case of someone in the military, or in Feng Jiao's case, be written off as something absolutely trivial and random. After all, if the employee wanted to encash their benefits, it wasn't like they could show 'dominant alpha killer' or something of that sort on it.

Feng Jiao's in particular, said 'accountant' on it.

While Feng Jiao had no idea of what an accountant did, the question had never arisen of how she was a couple months underage and was still working for the government. It wasn't like she had any interest in accounting either, since she was more interested in blowing werewolves up.

If the question were to arise, she was going to fail miserably at answering.

And then it happened.

"Your age says seventeen. How exactly did you pass the accounting exam?" the bank lady asked suspiciously.

She wasn't initially very suspicious of Feng Jiao, but now she definitely was.

It was much like someone trying to prove their ID was real by pulling out an even faker one. Sure, the picture on her ID looking like a twelve year old could be explained. The account was opened about six or seven years ago indeed, but a government employ ID?

At seventeen?

The bank lady herself had tried out for one of those delicious and juicy money making opportunities that was working for the government. It was far easier to embezzle money from the government than the bank she currently worked at after all.

But everyone had the same idea. Thus the government seats were highly competitive. There were probably people with MBAs and PhDs applying for accounting roles, what exactly was someone who hadn't even come of age doing to get that job?

Feng Jiao was caught at a point where she simply didn't know what to reply with if she were to reply at all.

She was the most terrible liar after all. There was no way that she would be able to get herself out of this one. She probably should've just given the lady her school ID instead.

"Oh, Jiao Jiao! Hi!" yelled the deep voice of a woman behind her.

Feng Jiao heaved a sigh of relief. She was saved.

It was Ming Lan. She was Feng Jiao's friend from the agency and a terrific liar.

Sure, she was a good bit older than Feng Jiao, and worked on much less high profile cases than Feng Jiao, but she was still making a name for herself out there in the world.

"What's the issue here?" she asked Feng Jiao as Feng Jiao waved to her silently and pitifully.

"This young lady is fabricating that she works for the government. Her card says she's an accountant but she's too young to have written the accountant exam." the bank lady said with a strict face.

"You're right." replied Ming Lan.

The bank lady's face lit up and her face morphed into a twisted simple that sent shivers down Feng Jiao's spine. Still, Feng Jiao trusted that Ming Lan was going to get her out of this situation, so she moved to the right and hid behind Ming Lan.

"Because she is indeed not an accountant. But she does work for the government." Ming Lan finished off her statement and the bank lady's face was still bright, but ever so slightly confused.

"Then what is she?" the bank lady asked, extremely puzzled.

Ming Lan put her hand into her bag and pulled out an ID of her own, "She's a mortician, like me."

The bank lady took a look at Ming Lan's card before frowning. She stared at her in anger and a slight bit of confusion that remained from before.

"Then why does she have 'accountant' written on the ID? And why would the government hire someone underage?" the bank lady asked triumphantly. These were questions she thought were irrefutable evidence against the two standing in front of her.

"Accountant? Oh that's because underage employees get confidentiality when working on something that could have them get shunned by the people around them." Ming Lan itched her nose casually while lying through her teeth, and then brushed her hair out of her face with one sexy sweeping move.

"As for being underage, the government will hire anybody for these jobs. No one wants to be a mortician nowadays. Too much "bad luck"-" Ming Lan emphasized on the bad luck bit with finger quotes before moving on, "and anyways, when has the government ever been moral?"
