War Guard

The second dual book mage in history, an outcast. Wielding the book of wrath comes with great power but at a price. Rage is his enemy, yet his greatest strength... P.S.: This is my first book so please bear with me through the grammatical errors and rough beginning, I promise to get better and the story gets better. Thanks

Chapter Two

My eyes shot open at the sound of the alarm and I sat up.

Maybe I was still a little on edge after the run through soulless territory the previous night.

They can be mean and dangerous.

In my world, we had three classes of humans,

One is the regular humans which I prayed to God I'm not a part of, not that it's a bad thing, I just find it boring sometimes.

Second is the book mages, I don't know much about them but I know that they use pages in a book to do magic and cool stuff. You had to manifest a book first to be a part of the elites that protect our world, they've got a university just for book mages and I hoped I'd manifest a book to be able to get in.

Lastly the soulless, they're still human but they turn into very powerful zombies when the sun goes down, In the morning you can easily walk through their turf and even talk with them but at night their turf's a no-go area for anyone who is not one of them, don't know if its a curse or something but its pretty unreal, I heard that they try to steal your soul or something like that.

"Casto! get down here I've gotta tell you something", Haz yelled.

"I'm still sleeping", I replied lying back down.

"GET DOWN HERE YOUNG MAN, YOU'VE GOT YOUR FINAL EXAM TODAY!".

My brain went numb as if someone sat on it for a very long time, I tried to process the information. My eyes widened at the realization of the situation.

I jumped out of bed and ran straight into the bathroom to take the fastest bath I'd ever taken in my life.

A few minutes later I was running down the stairs thinking to myself, 'shit!! I've got my final exam today and I didn't even flip a page.

I got to the bottom of the stairs only to be met with the face of a furious Haz.

"Hello", I blurted out trying not to look at his face.

I rushed to the fridge looking for something I could chomp up before I leave.

"Hey the fridge is empty", replied me after I opened the fridge to see if there was anything to eat, Haz hardly cooked.

"There's nothing in there I didn't restock it, I'm going away for a while so I don't think if I buy the stuff you're gonna eat it", he answered.

"Where are you going this time, Styph?", I asked.

"Don't worry about that just get to school, here is a little money for lunch", he said stretching his hand with some cash.

"Lunch? What about breakfast?".

"Just go, I'll still be here when you get back I'm leaving in the evening", he said pushing me out the front door.

I walked out the front door to meet Gentrove walking towards our house at a fast pace, he was a very large guy you could barely tell that I was a year older than him, he was a lot taller than me though I was just 5.9. From the tattered state of his always well-kept hair, I could tell he forgot just as I did.

"Come on man we are late, it's the last day of high school we gotta make it epic". He said smiling sheepishly.

"Okay let's go".

Our school was one of the biggest schools in Tarc City, it was a non-magic school since they didn't allow mages and non-mages to mix, hence the little information I know about magic.

We walked toward the entrance where we met our classmate Dero at the stairs. He didn't look like it but he was a very intelligent guy, even though he looked like a bully.

"You guys know the exam is scheduled for this morning right?", Dero asked.

"We know, let's go", I replied as we all went in.

The exam was fairly easy with the help of Gentrove my big and intelligent friend.

We finished earlier than most so I spent my remaining exam time watching my crush write majestically on her paper.

Shida was her name and I had a crush on her forever, well I wouldn't say I had a crush on her it was more like admiration for the best female student in our class, but she's never really noticed me, hurts right?

Finally, the bell rang to signal the end of our final exam in high school.

"Come on, go talk to her this might be your last chance", Dero urged me to go talk to someone who has never noticed me before.

I started to walk over, I was feeling confident cause it was the last day of high school even if she rejected me at least I won't see her again.

I was walking down towards Shida when we heard a deafening noise.

BOOOOM!!!!!!

I lost balance as the explosion shook the building.

"What the hell?".

"Is it a gas explosion?", Dero asked.

"It feels like it", I replied.

I looked over the baluster, 'But why is there no smoke', I noticed because it started to look strange.

Everyone was looking out the window at this point trying to see smoke but all we saw was nothing.

I kept looking until I finally caught a glimpse of dust that rose just a little bit over the trees from where our house was, I started heading back home to check on Haz.

I popped out of the corner to be looking straight at where our house was supposed to be, but all I saw was wreck and ruin.

I saw Haz and my mind got calmer.

I started to wonder how this could happen, what could smash a whole house all at once.

"Hey, What happened here", I asked walking toward Haz.

Haz kept searching through the rubble.

"How? How did he find me?", He just stood there asking himself not even noticing that I was there.

"HEY!!!", I shout as he snapped out of his trance.

"I don't know the...., I think I got something I have to tell you", He said when he finally looks at me.

"You think?!", I asked still shocked at the scene.
