He understood part of his abilities when he evolved into a rank-one beast.
He could be defeated by some rank-0 magical beasts only if they have E-rank skills. He is technically invincible against rank-0 magical beasts, as there are very few rank-0 magical beasts with E-rank skills.
Since rank-0 beasts have E-rank skills only when they are classified as bosses.

He also didn't dare choose the evolutions that were looking broken, as they might be waste and SP draining at the end as the system was hiding information.
He was indeed attracted by one of them, which looked broken, but he didn't dare choose it.
