WADAA

Hello, My brothers and sisters in humanity, I present to you one of the most beautiful folk tales, which is narrated to children and enjoyed by both the young and the old, cherished by the elders in my country, Tunisia. Just mentioning Tunisia is enough to understand that this tale comes from a country with a rich history and a grand past. It's not merely a story, but a narrative full of lessons, constructed wonderfully, passed down from generation to generation. Each generation has left its mark on it, adding to its charm and extracting from it pleasures that exceed the present delights. It is enchanting, playing with the spirit and teasing the thoughts.

Chapter1:

Once in a distant time, there was a man and a woman who were graced by God with seven of everything:

seven sons,

seven pieces of land,

seven dogs,

and seven rifles.

The only thing different was that they had just one house, and they possess two slaves, during a cruel time when people were unfairly made to work for others.

One day, while the man was harvesting grass from one of his fields, he accidentally cut his finger with the sickle, resulting in a serious injury. He passed away a few days later, leaving sorrow and a void in the hearts of his wife and children.

Days after his death, the mother discovered that she was pregnant, bringing her much joy. She offered charitable acts, increased her prayers to God, hoping to be blessed with her wish. Her wish was to give birth to a daughter who would be a sister and a friend to her.

The children, on the other hand, wished for a sister who would guide them towards goodness and repel evil. Upon learning of their mother's pregnancy, they gathered around her to inform her that they had pledged not to stay in the village if the newborn was a boy. The land that had denied them their sole wish of having a sister was not a place they could continue to live in.

They agreed with her that on the day of her delivery, they would go to the nearby mountain from the house. As soon as she gave birth, the servant would send them a signal using a spindle if the baby was a girl, and with a sickle if it was a boy. If the newborn was a boy, they would leave the village forever and seek their fortune in God's land.

The promised day arrived, the day when the woman, the mother of the seven, went through labor, heralding the arrival of the newborn into the world.

Here, the seven children went out to await the signal at the mountain as agreed with their mother. While they waited, the woman ascended to the rooftop, holding the sickle, announcing that the newborn was a boy. Without delay, they gathered their belongings, carrying what they could, and fulfilled their promise by migrating to a new land.

The mother was saddened by the departure of her children when she learned that they had decided to abandon her, leaving her in a mixture of sorrow, regret, confusion, and anguish. She decided to name her daughter "Wada'a" as a tribute to the memory of her sons, and the name comes from the Arabic word for "farewell," pronounced as "alwadaa."

Yes, indeed, that's how it happened.

And there was no mistake in the narrative. The newborn was a girl, contrary to what the sons had been informed.

The reason for this was that when Wadaa emerged from her mother's womb, the servant leaped from her position at the command of her mistress, holding the spindle. She went out to the courtyard of the house to give a signal to the seven sons towards the opposite mountain. However, on her way, she was intercepted by her husband, who took the spindle from her and handed her a sickle, instructing her to use it to signal. He convinced her to do so, explaining that the departure of the seven sons would be beneficial for them, as they would benefit from their remaining assets. With a woman who will not handle things wisely. and a young girl unable to manage affairs in her favor, it would be more prudent. The planned outcome was achieved.
