20 3A Break (1): The Payback Tank

Pocket Village 0912, Oceania Battle Zone

1:32 am

"Woah, look at the girl go! Or is that a guy?".

"Who cares what gender identity they go by, they're showing serious skill with that shield!".

"I know, right?! Hell, they're already onto their last two enemies in the quota!".

"Do you reckon that's Wanderer? Cause if that is, I'm gonna…!".

"Get yourself one-shotted? Sure, go right ahead, fuckwit!".

"Nah, there's no way that's Wanderer. Cause if it were, they'd be one-shotting them far more easily than this idiot here. 'Sides, I saw her glow gold upon a Level Up, so they're obviously a Combatstyler.".

"Oh, if that's the case then they're probably using the [Bastion] Class".

"Still, even for a glorified meat shield, the way they have been going about this must be rough…".

"Are you los cabrones here to act as my support or my cheer squad?!", Elina, the law student friend of Gab, as well as the [Bastion] in question, snapped with increasing annoyance, "Because let me tell you, you're doing JODOR TODO in either one of those roles!!!".

Still dressed in the shirt and pants she wore earlier that day and armed only with what looks like a horribly battle-scarred rolenda shield, Elina looks absolutely wrecked at this moment.

Lacking the somewhat aloof visage she wears normally, she was breathing hard and fast enough that it sounded like she was only one step away from kicking off her mortal coil, her hair and glasses were askew and she was also sweating so profusely that one could clearly see what looks to be a very risqué black bra underneath her now drenched shirt!

(On an aside note, the fact that onlookers could undoubtedly see such an article of underclothes in this situation instead of a binder that are preferred by a number of non-binary and genderqueer folk and still think she she didn't identify as cis-gendered was another major reason as to why she snapped! It's not like she actively tried to cultivate ambiguity about her gender identity after all!)

Thankfully, the ferocity of her outburst managed to shut up all the observers right quick, as her both her outburst and demeanour at that moment tells them clear as day that she is entering a crucial stage in the fight.

And they're not wrong. After choosing to fight the monsters in the Beginners Field the way she has, her concentration is starting to fray, and her HP is now in the single digits, even if she had time to allocate her AP points during the fight.

As for why this was the case; it was because she choose to dispense with the notion of facing one enemy at a time, and instead decided to aggro multiple enemies at the same time as she was facing her current enemy!

Whilst 1v1ing starter enemies would be seen as a smarter choice in terms of reducing potential HP and MP loss, Elina came to the conclusion that such an approach wouldn't cut it, as they have to defeat twenty enemies in the Beginner Field, where there is an overabundance of Players and only a limited number of enemies. With this in mind, she realised that if she wants to finish the Starter Quest as quickly as possible, such an approach is necessary.

In addition to the obvious problems that could occur when utilising this approach, she herself has put an even greater level of difficulty to this situation by using the fighting style she's given to all of her D&D characters, which can either work extraordinarily well…or leads the user on a more expedient route to the grave!

If Elina's friends were here, they wouldn't be surprised to find her in such a state, given that using her usual methods for fighting opponents is far more difficult to execute without issue in a VRMMORPG than it is in a TRPG.

Whilst Elina always prefers to act as their party's "MT" (Main Tank) in any campaign she and her friends play no matter what base Class she chooses, she doesn't quite play a Tank in the way one would usually expect.

Instead of a classic "Blood Tank", where she just takes all the hits for her party in a war of attrition to see who runs out of HP first, or a "Blink Tank", that focuses on evading hits whilst still maintaining aggro, she opts for a combination of the two.

That being what she prefers to refer to as a "Payback Tank", which involves using her shield (or whatever she uses in its place) to parry away an opponent's attack before it hits, and immediately launching a counterattack in the small stretch of time said opponent has been made vulnerable.

Whilst this may not sound game changing when looking at the DPS Classes (and if one uses such a tactic often in a Souls game), it's not something you typically see from a Tank Class.

After all, the role of a Tank is to basically keep their party alive long enough to kill the enemy, not to kill it themselves.

However, in the legal world that Elina is studying to get into, simply taking or evading hits is not going to cut it, and there never a guarantee that she will have a "Healer" on the sidelines to keep her going in the ways that matter.

No, for every action that the opponent initiates against a client of hers, she needs to push the attack away from them and immediately launch some kind of counterattack against the offender.

That, is the way Elina chooses to both protect and fight.

Thus, whenever Gab designs a new Homebrew Class with Elina in mind, they all have various options for both stopping enemy attacks and making them pay dearly for launching them in the first place.

But, as stated before, this is FAR more difficult to put into practice in a VRMMORPG than it is in TRPG, especially when one hasn't physically practiced practiced such a defensive/offensive style in real life.

And such lack of RL practise is showing on her Status and general state of mind, in spite of having picked [Bastion] Class Skills that were well suited for this approach.

Although, it could be said that those very Skills played a big part in why she was in such a state in the first place.

That being said, she's still hanging on, now face to face with the final two enemies she needs to defeat in order to complete this stupidly enhanced Starter Quest!

And said enemies, the Etmotables, are a rather… strange choice for a type of first enemy to face in the game.

Due to learning Latin and Ancient Greek in her spare time to help in better understanding some of the legal terms that are derived from said languages, she her suspicions when she heard the first first half of the enemy type's name (although she initially a certain theory about the name's second half). Which, to the detriment of many Players, were both proven correct.

To break it down: "Etmo" was a bastardised short form of the Ancient Greek word "Entomon", which means "insect", whilst "table" was short for "vegetable".

So basically: they where Vegetable Insects!

During the singular fight she had with these creatures, she noticed that they came in all sorts combinations with common insects and vegetables, such as Sweet Potatoworms, Zucchinipedes, Capsicants etc.

All whilst being the size of medium sized to large-sized dogs.

A truly "fantastic" combination, to put it mildly.

At this moment, Elina was face-to-face (or whatever her opponents heads were called) with two Etmotables that looked, respectively, like a spider with pumpkin hide on it's carapace, and a wasp with eggplant in place of it's abdomen (with the stinger still at it's end, unfortunately).

The spider was bad enough, but even if (and this was a big IF) she was partial to the organ an eggplant was used to represent in emojis, she wasn't planning on "punctured" by one with with a venomous sting at the end of it anytime soon!

Fortunately, whilst they seem completely different from one another, Elina and quite a few others noticed that the Etmotables share very similar attack patterns.

And thankfully, they also have a minuscule amount of both HP (which was roughly 50) and Defence. They were Level 1 Starter monsters, after all.

So whilst she was exhausted (and will soon become even more exhausted if she got the timing right), her eyes was clear and focused, laser focused on her enemies movements, hoping that they'll be considerate enough to attack her at the same time.

"Come on, come on, come to papi, you little insectos…", she muttered under her breath.

Fortunately (for her), the two RL opposing species seemed to have came to a consensus, as they slowly approached her at a synchronised pace, before suddenly lunging towards her, pincers and and stinger aimed at her relatively unprotected flesh.

Closer, closer, closer…

"Now!", Elina screamed internally as she began the first step of the combo that killed the eighteen enemies that proceeded these two, one that is reminiscent of her "Payback Tank" characters.

Starting with…

"[Shield Swipe]!", Elina bellowed, her voice taking on a distorted cadence when declaring the Skill's name, before her shield arm made a backhanding motion of its own accord, striking the parts the pouncing Etmotables were using to attack the exhausted Bastion almost simultaneously.

Fortunately, since she timed the Skill's activation at just the right time, she only saw the following notifications pop up:

Parried! x2, -0, -0

The Etmotables, on the other hand, were not so lucky.

One interesting aspect of parrying in Arbitrium is that after one does a successful one against an enemy without taking any damage whatsoever, a Player can score at least one "Riposte" within at least ten seconds after said parry, which doubles not just physical damage, but also effect damage.

And given that she parried before the damage effect of [Shield Swipe] activated, the red numbers that popped up above these enemies heads were double what they would've been without this mechanic:

Riposte! x 2, -14! x 2

Next, in the next two seconds since she parried them, her only Passive Skill activated, hopefully with all three of its effects being applied.

<The effect of the Passive Skill, [Consequence] has been activated>

<Pumpkinhide Spider's Defences have been reduced by 70%>

<Eggplanter Wasp's Defences have been reduced by 70%>

"That's one…", Elina thought, feeling as if the world is going in slow motion, before…:

<Pumpkinhide Spider has been inflicted with damage equal to 70% of your Physical Attack value>

<Eggplanter Wasp has been inflicted with damage equal to 70% of your Physical Attack value>

Riposte! x 2, -22! x 2

"That's two, now please, please, PLEASE give me the fucking third…", Elina prayed, as she didn't want to protract this fight any more than necessary!

Thankfully, it seemed like someone received her prayer, for in the next second…:

<Pumpkinhide Spider has been rendered [Prone] for 4 seconds>

<Eggplanter Wasp has been rendered [Prone] for 4 seconds>

"¡SI!", Elina exclaimed loudly, not wasting any time in activating her final Skill to end this fight.

"[Bared Bastion]!", she roared, as she automatically leaped up in the air and fell towards the two helpless enemies shield first, not caring about the Skill's more detrimental effects, as that will soon become a non-factor.

An attitude that soon proved to be justified, when she soon saw the red numbers above the now squished Vegetable Insects heads:

Riposte! x 2, Critical! x 2, -90! x 2

<Pumpkinhide Spider and Eggplanter Wasp have been slain!>

-50 Bronze>

As a golden aura that signalled her ascension to Level 2 flared up from her body, Elina collapsed onto the grass-laden ground in a sweaty, exhausted heap.

However, even whilst her breathing was laboured, she had a wide smile on her face, glad that her self-imposed challenge was over.

And as the surrounding Players have started letting out congratulatory cheers over both her impressive parrying skills and her inflicting over twice the amount of damage required to kill the buggers despite having a Class more geared towards defence rather than offence, Elina soon found out exactly how worth it her trial was!

<Congratulations! You have acquired the Title, [Parry Maniac]>

<Congratulations! You have acquired the Title, [Achiever in the Peripheral (Combatstyler)]>

<Congratulations! You have acquired the Title, [Achiever in the Peripheral (Frontline)]>

<Congratulations! You have acquired the Title, [Achiever in the Peripheral (Bastion)]>

…to say that Elina was stunned was an understatement!

Not only did she also get a Title, something that seemed up until now to be only Wanderer's monopoly, but she got also obtained three additional Titles that informed her that she was the first one to get such a thing in not one, but three different categories!

"Does that mean…I'll be getting a…?!", she started, but was abruptly silenced when a new notification popped up. One she wasn't even remotely expecting to get, much less this soon!

<Notice: You have achieved something that is deserving of being Announced far and wide.

Would you like it to be Announced: Y/N

Warning: Please submit your answer within 60 seconds, as not answering will be taken as you not wanting it to be Announced.

Make your choice well>

For just a brief moment, Elina considered just pressing "N", since quite a few people were less than happy about how a certain Freestyler has been practically hogging all the glory in the first few hours of the game without struggling like the rest of them!

But, again, it was just a brief moment!

"¡A la mierda! If that "anomaly" can accept these one after the other without fear of reprisal from the rest of the world like an idiota, then I sure as hell can!", she exclaimed as she pressed the "Y", blissfully unaware of how much of an earful she would get from said "anomaly", especially since her assumptions were so far off the mark!

As soon as she confirmed her choice, a rather unusual Announcement was made to every Player in the game:

<World Notice: Due to higher than anticipated amount of National, Regional and International Announcements generated by multiple Players within the first few hours of the game's runtime, all Announcements will be streamlined into singular Announcements from here on out>

"Multiple Players?", Elina sarcastically asked no one in particular, as a tired smirk formed on her visage, "Don't you just mean one out-of-this-world anomaly, and one tired and sweaty also-ran?".

Instead of answering her sarcastic remark, the world simply elected to Announce her achievements to the world under her IGN, which itself translates into "Rights Defender":

<Announcements (National; Regional; International):

""…!!"".

At first, everyone in Elina's general vicinity (as well as the rest of the Players currently logged on) started to feel the now all-too-familiar sense of incandescent rage start to build up in their chests, courtesy of a certain complete, glory-hogging bastard!

But then everyone blinked, when they realised that not only was the Player IGN was different, said Player also had a completely different Style entirely!

This was confirmed even quicker by the Combatstylers in the Beginner Field where Elina was located, where her onlookers quickly noticed that her body flared up with golden light six times in quick succession, in spite of the fact that she already Levelled Up not too long ago!

There was an awkward silence in the air, as the Players surrounding Elina, enough that she started (metaphorically) sweating, and prepared to start distributing all her AP to her Status before…

"Holy shit, is that her, Defensora De Derechos?!"

"What do you mean "is that her"?! Of course it is! We literally saw her killing every single one of these little bastards with only parries and ripostes ever since she stepped onto the field."

"Not to mention that she Levelled Up by multiple Levels after she got her last Level Up."

"I've got to get a photo of her, right now! There's no way I'm not going to tell my friends what I just saw without any proof."

"If that was Wanderer, I would be absolutely pissed off! But, since we all saw her working her arse of this entire time, I'd say that she's more than earned it."

"Plus, with her, not Wanderer, getting Titles and Announcements as a result of putting a fair amount of effort into…that means we also have a chance of getting those things too!!"

"Haha, take that Wanderer, you complete bastard! This game no longer centres around you alone!!"

"Querido Dios…", Elina muttered weakly, almost disbelieving what everyone around her was saying.

They not only chosen not to kill her because they witnessed her earned her rewards from sheer effort alone, but also because what she achieved has proven that Wanderer is not the only one who can gain the things that caused them to possess such great infamy.

"Not to mention that there's no way in Hell I'm not going to get doxxed after this…", Elina muttered with a bitter smile on her face, recalling at least several people who were taking pics of her to share with their friends.

Given the speed that certain information can be acquired in the modern era, she'd be shocked if people didn'tascertain her IRL identity before she finished her first session in Arbitrium, so the next day will be…interesting to say the least.

"Hey, Defensora de Derechos, are you ok?", a concerned female voice asked, causing Elina to turn her head…

…only for her eyes to meet a very well-endowed chest, contained in a frilly set of lime-green lingerie!

With a "slight" amount of effort, Elina tore her gaze from the speaker's metaphorical eyes to meet the actual eyes of a green-eyed woman with black hair that was done up in a ponytail, and a cute little beauty mark just above the right side of her lips.

Thanks to her recent acquisition of the [Scan] Skill, Elina quickly discovered that this concerned beauty was a Level 1 Caller who called herself "Finger Lime", obviously after the native Australian fruit of the same name.

"Given how juicy her "pearls" look, it certainly fits…" Elina thought vacantly before shaking her head to clear that particular fog from her head, but not before Finger Lime caught the way the Hispanic Bastion was checking her out.

"…before you ask, me and my friends were having a lingerie sleepover when we logged in", Finger Lime stated with a smirk, causing Elina to cough in embarrassment, before noticing that there was a group of similarly scantily-clad ladies grouped up behind the Caller.

"That aside, why do you look like you're one foot in the grave? Sure, taking on twenty of these nasty things would be exhausting, but not many of the other Frontline Class holders here look nearly as exhausted as you do.", Finger Lime asked, causing Elina's eyebrows to raise slightly at that observation before she simply sighed.

"First off, you can just call me Defensora. And secondly, yeah, the battle itself was exhausting, but the biggest reason is that the Active Skills I've chosen consume a percentage of my current Stamina instead of MP, the former of which I can't see in my Stats yet.", Elina explained, not bothering to hide certain aspects of her initial Skills, as they were readily available to any Bastion (and Freestyler, of course) in Character Creation. Hell, she would be surprised if someone on the online forums didn't recognised at least one of her Active Skills.

"Anyway,", Elina said whilst waving her hand in the air, opting to change the subject, "was there another reason you came over to me, aside from checking to see if I kicked the bucket?", she finished with a raised eyebrow, causing Finger Lime and her friends to shift slightly in embarrassment.

"Actually…we were wondering if you could possibly join our party as our Tank until we each finish the Quest ourselves, since none of us are Frontline Class users.", Finger Lime admitted with an embarrassed blush.

That last statement caused Elina's attention to shift briefly to her Finger Lime's party, which consisted of a Ransacker, a Surveyor, a Caster and a Medium, who's IGNs are Bush-Tucker, Horticuller, Rainbreaker and Come Hither respectively.

Aside from the fact that they were all drop dead gorgeous woman dressing in only simulating lingerie, the one other thing that they had in common (that Elina could discern in the context of the game) was that none of them had a Frontline Class, much less one that could act as a Tank for them.

"Of course, we're not asking if you can join us straight away, much less for you to do it for free!", Finger Lime's friend Bush-Tucker interjected, making a quick clarification with a nervous undertone in her voice, whilst running her hand through closely cropped and spiked blonde hair, that looked slightly at odds with her powder blue babydoll slip.

"If you're fine with accepting our request, we'll wait for as long as you need for you to fully recover your Stamina.", said Horticuller, a tall woman of who looked to be of Asian-descent with long and straight black hair, dressed in an especially risqué looking set of red and black lingerie.

"Although, we unfortunately we don't have that much IG currency or Items and the like to fully compensate you, especially when you gained a sizeable amount of Gold recently…", Rainbreaker admitted reluctantly, shaking her waves of chestnut hair across her white chemise which, thankfully, didn't leave her abundant curves to the imagination.

"That being said,", Come Hither, a statuesque woman of African descent with an afro who was wearing a dark brown garter set that complimented her skin tone, interjected with a frown directed towards her friend, "we would be willing to pay you with IRL money if you'd like. Or maybe something a bit more…specific.".

Elina could only chuckle over the fact that so soon after she gained an unexpected boon from fighting the way she did for her Starter Quest, she already had a flock of gorgeous women asking her to act as a Bus of sorts for them!

Would some naysayers find their attitude to be a bit shallow? Elina didn't doubt it.

But since she was not only higher levelled than every other Player on the field, and that none of the ladies in front of her were Tanks, she herself didn't their reasons for approaching her to be shallow, but rather pragmatic.

And if one of the other icons that shown up on their Player IDs were of any indication, they would've most likely not asked this of a random guy if he achieved the same as her.

"You don't need to worry about paying me with money, IG or IRL.", Elina stated, causing the ladies in front of her to show expressions of disbelief, before she raised up a finger with a serious expression.

"But…", she started, drawing out the silence long enough to turn those expressions of disbelief into worry, before suddenly let out a smile, "I would be more amenable to joining you ladies for as long as you need if I can take one of you out for a coffee.".

The ladies blinked rapidly, letting what she suggested sink in, before they started breaking out in laughter.

"If that's the price for gaining your services,", Finger Lime started, wiping a tear from her eye, "then I'm sure I can speak for me and my friends in saying that you're more than welcome to take all of us out for a coffee…and anything else we'll feel comfortable doing with you…", she finished with a suggestive wink and smiles from her friends!

With a laugh that had hints of disbelief over what just happened to her (what might potentially will happen to her in the near future), Elina smiled at the party in front of her.

"Well, since you put it that way, you got yourselves a Payback Tank.".
