Chapter 20

For the rest of the day, Glen paid extra attention to everything he was doing. He muttered the steps of the jobs he did so he would know he was doing them right, then when he was done he tried to remember everything he had said. It made the day seem longer, but he didn’t have any more memory lapses. Fortunately, his dust mask covered his mouth and the noise of the machinery drowned out his voice. He didn’t want Lawrence or anyone else thinking he was rambling to himself and start worrying that he was going crazy, too.

Glen was thrilled when the day was finally over. The loft was finally ready for the new organ. That part of his job was done. However, he didn’t escape the church without Father Sabella catching him and telling him that, while he hadn’t found anything on the Michael statuette in Father McAnderson’s journals yet, he would let Glen know the minute he did.

“Thanks,” Glen said unenthusiastically.
