Chapter 03: Awakening(01)

Outside Bloodwind's winter Hogan, Monument Valley, USA, Earth

Monday, January 4th, 0103 PA; 06:00(Mountain Daylight Time)

A 125cm tall kid with shoulder length black hair came to a stop in front of a concrete 6 sided dwelling. His breathing was ragged as he walked in a circle on the trail he had been running on. He began powering down the 4tonne of wrist, ankle,, and core gravity weights. Steam rose from his sweat soaked gray tracksuit. While the thin sheet of snow beneath his feet came up in a small white cloud as his sneakers struck the ground.

A 153 cm tall woman with long black hair and a youthful appearance came out of the door and stood there looking at the 8 year old little boy.  This woman wore a blue long sleeve blouse and a pair of blue jeans faded by the elements. To the world she was known as the S+ rank Hero Bloowind.

She looked back at the crater strewn trail. "So 50k?"

One…One…100k.

The boy currently trying to regulate his breathing was Kai Nakai. He had been training with his grandmother and occasional tutors since he was 4 years old.

He had a photographic memory so studying academics was simple for him. His grandmother had been insistent about him learning the sciences, especially physics. For combat training he had been learning Muay Boran and Kyokushin Karate with two of his grandmother's friends. They were the S+ rank Heroes Raijin and Fujin, a pair of twins from Tokyo. This along with constant body conditioning, daily meditation and reading his father's vintage comic collection was Kai's day to day over the past 4 years. He had already gotten to the point where he could outperform your average D rank.

Every summer Supreme would drop off his grandson John along with Maxine for a couple weeks while Bloodwind, he, and the rest of the Circle made public appearances. The two boys would spar and train together as well as hang out during this time.

Mai's left eyebrow rose slightly. "Well at least Kell and his crew can rest assured of their job security as long as you're aro…"

Her words came to a stop as she looked at Kai's eyes.

They were currently glowing with a pale silver light.

Kai stopped walking in circles and looked at his grandmother. At this point Mai's face became serious. "Kai… go get that bag of stuff I had you put together on your birthday."

"Why do I need my Awakening bag? Wait, am I glowing already?" Kai looked at his hands as he raised them in front of him.

"Your eyes just started glowing. If your body was glowing I wouldn't be standing here. I'd be dragging you towards the bunker by your ankles at mach 6."

She then turned around walking into their winter home. Kai shook his head and smiled as his eyes glowed a pale silver.

Former Cheyenne Mountain Complex, Colorado, USA, Earth

Monday, January 4th, 0103 PA; 06:15(MDT)

A woman and a boy flew within a whirlwind landing before a wide tunnel that led into a large mountain complex. They walked along the road that led inside, coming to a large 21 tonne blast door.

Mai looked at Kai smiling. "So you have the map. Right?"

"Yes ma'am, I've already memorized it too."

"OK, Good. Just remember there is a digital calendar slash clock in your room. There's also one in the main living area, the training room,  and another in the library."

"So I have to stay here for 2 weeks. Right, Grandma?"

"Yes. It should give you enough time to get used to your powers and strength after you finish awakening.  A word of advice. Once your body expels all of its impurities, move slowly and touch everything like it's made of eggshells."

"Alright, I'll remember."

"Make sure you keep up your training and don't forget there's a library."

Grandma at this rate we'll still be standing here in a week. So you'll still be here to remind me."

*Tsk* "Well you're definitely my grandson… Fine, give me a hug then get your narrow butt inside."

Kai hugged his grandmother tightly. "Love you Sáni."

"I love you too shíyáhzhí."

Kai let go of Mai. She booped his nose then turned and walked towards the blast door smiling. "Well you gonna go in or just sit there staring at the wall all day?"

Kai shook his head laughing quietly to himself as he walked through the doorway. As he went in, the door slowly closed behind him.

It then opened back up part way and he heard Mai's voice."Did you pack that suit I got you?"

"Yes ma'am"

"Good…"

The door shut again, the large bolts locking in place sealing him in. "Now for some serious research!!!"

He took a comic out of his backpack and then set it back over his shoulder. Then Kai walked down the long black tiled hallway towards the living quarters while reading the comic.

'I'm sure this'll work. I can boost my speed with lightning and use wind to disperse the atmosphere in front of me.  I can even speed up my perception with lightning like Raijin.'

'Hmmm… Pretty sure Fujin's mini tornado trick will let me make a whirlwind. Walking on air should be possible. Of course. I guess I could just fly. I really think running on air will make me way more maneuverable than flying though.'

'Why do I feel so tired though? Oh, right…x

'I can't wait to try some of this out.'

'This will be awesome!!!'

A smile appeared on his face as he came to the living quarters.

He entered the first door on the right and looked around. It had a desk, a bed frame, and a closet all bolted to the floor. They appeared to be made of some sort of metal and were painted a light gray.

Kai walked over and unrolled the mattress that had been left on the bed frame. Then he took the bedding off of the desk, made the bed then set his backpack on top of it.

He then took out a stack of old comics, a few sets of clothes, and a black compression suit his grandmother had gotten him.

'Grandma said this was made of some sort of ceramic mesh that could survive reentry. She also told me to wait until my skin had hardened after my Awakening was complete to try it on.'

'I wonder why?'

Rubbing his palm against the inside of the suit his eyes widened.

"This is like sandpaper on the inside…"

'Glad I didn't just put it on that would have caused some serious chafing…'

With that thought he put the clothing and backpack in the closet.

Kai reached his hand towards his wrist intending to go on the internet with his holo-device. Not finding it there, he checked his pockets then glanced at the bed that had only a stack of comics on it. He then stopped and stood there a moment staring at his backpack.

'Please say it's in there. Please. Please. Please.'

He opened the backpack again. Checking every pocket thoroughly. His shoulders then slumped and his head drooped.

'Annnd, I left my holophone at the house… This is going to be a long couple weeks…'

Then Kai returned comics to his backpack.

He pulled out the map and walked to the kitchen to get an MRE.

When he finished eating he went to the library and after checking the card catalog went straight to the section containing physics books.

'I think I get why grandma always had me study this stuff. It'll make figuring out my powers a lot easier.'

He spent 4 hours in the library. Afterwards Kai went to the gym. 100 push-ups,  100 sit ups, 100 squats, and a 10 km run later he took a shower, then got another MRE.

Kai went to his room and read comics till around 6pm then went back to the gym and practiced hand to hand combat for a couple hours.

He then grabbed another MRE, took another shower then meditated till close to 10pm. Then he went to bed.

This repeated itself for 2 more days.

3 days later

Kai awoke to the worst smell he had ever experienced. Then he opened his eyes to see flames.

Sitting up he saw that his bed was on fire and there was a layer of black fluid below the bed. As he stood up a blast of light burst from his body instantly snuffing the fire and most of the bed.

This resulted in a sphere of slowly expanding light to encompass everything within about 2 meters of Kai. With everything metal it touched turning red then orange and eventually white before it dissipated into the air.

He then noticed tiny arcs of white electricity moving over the surface of his body.
