Chapter 36: Combat Commences

I try to ignore the distinct feeling of the freefall I’m in which makes my insides curl and rise in my throat as Nathaniel and I plummet to the ground. Every part of me is shaking with adrenaline. That precious moment before we collide with the ground is when I harness that energy, letting it slow my thoughts and steady my hands.

The vampire Nathaniel was aiming for doesn’t even know what hit him as Nathaniel lands square on his shoulders, making a tremendous noise like cracking concrete. The impact nearly throws me off Nathaniel’s back, but I thankfully was ready to roll off of him the moment we impacted the ground.

There is an additional crack as Nathaniel crouches and wrenches the vampire’s head free from his torso. I pull out my firearm and shoot three times at the closest target, another male vampire who was looking out of the window. I know I hit twice based on the darkening of the vampire’s clothing in two distinct circular patterns.
