Chapter 31: In the Eye of the Beholder

*Nathaniel*

“You know, I can do this myself,” says Claire, folding her arms across her chest and giving me a partially disapproving stare. “You don’t have to go testing beams and literally rock the boat just to make sure I’m okay. I can take care of myself.”

“Certainly,” I reply. “Though, it is the choice that matters. At the very least, it demonstrates chivalry isn’t dead, and all thanks to a centuries-old vampire. Now, try not to jostle too much.” I don’t need to look over my shoulder to know she wrinkled her nose and made a face at me in rebellion.

I take a moment and test the beams under my feet before holding out my hand for Claire. I know she is capable of balancing on her own, but the gesture is meant to assist if she needs it.

“Is this how you’ve always been?” asks Claire, arms still folded.

“If you mean a chivalrous vampire, capable of independent thought and sophistication, then not quite,” I say, pulling a thoughtful smirk onto my face.
