Chapter 14: Poking

*Claire*

I flip the turn signal and pull into the parking lot. The day is a beautiful one. Even though there is a bone-chilling cold in the air, there are wispy clouds drifting in the ice-blue sky.

At least, it would be beautiful if I were not currently stuck with Nathaniel for the entire day. Honestly! I feel like I am on a blind date with someone a friend set me up with.

The conversation is case-related or dry. He does not have any good jokes. He also keeps looking at me – just looking! What is it that he is trying to see? Is he trying to read my mind? Is he checking me out? Awkward.

I shove my hands in my pockets, fingers grasping around the squirt bottle of holy water in one pocket and the sterling silver letter opener I bought from Etsy that I ended up rush ordering. As expensive as it was, it feels dangerous to not have a weapon like this.

As long as Nathaniel told me the truth, the things I did to keep myself safe will work.
