Chapter 12: Temporary Trust

*Claire*

I didn’t like this. I really didn’t like this. Here I am sitting in my cubical typing away and that slippery vampire, Nathaniel Ballard, with an ego larger than life is sitting in a chair practically reading over my shoulder.

Several nights ago, I reluctantly made the deal with myself that I would not arrest Nathaniel for obstruction of justice, tampering with evidence, or disturbing a crime scene – yet. At the moment, we are working together to crack the “Drainer” case and, for the life of me, I hate that he is actually helpful.

There is just something about him that is irritating to me. Is it the way he speaks? Is it just his presence? I did not have an answer and, honestly, I did not want to dedicate any more brainpower to him.

What I want is to solve this case; so, naturally, he needs to be here.

I hear him say something and snap myself from my thoughts.

“What?” I ask.
