Chapter 7 - Saving Magic [2/2]

A vampire. Several steps in front of him between the trees was actually a vampire. Stunned, he stared at her. She had blonde curls that almost reached her hips, but Arken realized at first glance that they were wrong. For a human being, however, she had to look like a beautiful young woman. "What are you staring at?" With her chin raised, she approached him and stood up before him. Although he stood on the slope of a hill and thus a few steps above her, she exuded so much authority that Arken for the time being thought it better to submit to her will.

He narrowed his eyes. The sunlight didn't seem to affect her pale skin, which is why she had to be at least a vampire of the fourth, if not third generation. Anything underneath would be too weak to safely step into the sun. Her harsh demeanour towards him also testified to the fact that she felt equal to him, to him, a second-generation vampire. Or at least give him that impression. It was crazy! For far too long Arken had not seen any of his species, so he could not assess them at all.

"It's been a long time since I last saw another vampire," he said, more to say.

"You better go back to wherever you've been hiding for the last four hundred years, and stay there," she replied coldly.

"For the next few years, this is my area. The world should be big enough for us by now so that we no longer step on each other's feet."

Arken frowned because of her unkindness. "Now, for the first time since the end of the Crusade, I see a more intelligent being than a man, and you have nothing better to do than threaten me?"

Her eyes narrowed to slits. "Go away, and don't let yourself be seen here if your life is dear to you."

Always be nice and quiet." Arken casually raised his hands. He knew that vampires were not pack animals, but he did not expect such aggression. Not to mention that vampires usually had no territory. Out of personal interest in not being discovered, they took care not to hunt too many in a human area, but otherwise everyone was free to go where he wanted.

It might be due to the glimmer of hope that flashed in him at her sight, but he was so suspicious.

His lips curled to a smile. Could it be? If the vampire woman had decided to live among humans, with all that was involved… After all, she didn't have the same problems as he did as a man.

"Don't worry, it doesn't look good on your face."

Arken smiled broadly and stepped back. She looked at him suspiciously.

"You're right, for the few of us who still exist, the world is big enough. If you want to claim this village for yourself, please. I'm going to hunt in one of the others."

Arken turned around and set out to climb the hill again. He would definitely keep an eye on the woman. Perhaps it was possible to complete the spell.
