1 Life

My life leaves nothing to the imagination. I have a rich family and people can't help but gather around me, but that doesn't mean I'm the idealistic noble brat people seem to think I am the second they meet me. Besides, we don't even look like your average rich family. No mansion, no fancy cars, and no beautiful women fawning at my feet. I just live in a medium-sized two-story house in California with my father. No support staff, no one doing chores, and no one keeping guard.

My father is a man who believes that independence and a decent handful of disciplinary action, is the key to good parenting. My mother was a stay at home mom for most of my life before she passed away from cancer when I was 14. Ever since my father hasn't been the same. At first, he wouldn't come home as much as he used to, but then he started moving on to more depressing behavior. Now when I see him, that once bright light in his eyes seems dim, and his once-powerful drive, slowly spinning off course.

The warm light flood through my window, heating the entirety of my body. I rolled over checking the time, it was two in the afternoon. I slowly rose and got into the shower, making sure to get every inch this time around. I didn't want to mess this up. Today is Mary and I's first year anniversary, it's a big event and it's going to mean a lot to her. I got out of the shower got dressed, putting on the essentials and combing my hair back. I took a step back to review my look; brown hair combed back, black knee-high overcoat with a white undershirt and dark blue jeans. I quickly did some poses and gave me a pass.

I walked out of the bathroom and headed to the front door.

"Hold it." my father appeared in my path blocking me. "Where are you going?" he crossed his arms and stared me down, waiting for an answer.

"I'm going to see Mary, it's our anniversary today." I cast him a smile trying to make it past him. For a minute he continued to stare at me, but something inside of him broke and his eyes dimmed, and he walked back to the couch and opened a fresh beer.

"Be back before dark alright... and remember Sam, your only fifteen, so no funny business or else, you get me?" my father said, his expression dark.

I visibly paled and let out a small choking sound. My father let out a small chuckle from my reaction, a rare sight nowadays. I quickly raced out the door and started off to my destination. I walked three blocks before I decided to give Mary a call, I pulled out my phone thumbing down to her number then clicking call. I put the phone to my ear and slowly made my way down the sidewalk; watching and waiting for my time to cross.

It rang a few times before she answered, "Hello?" Ah... this is what the voice of an angel sounds like. A smooth resounding alto, soft but firm from the very first word.

"Hey there, you miss me?" I grinned at my phone as I walked making my way further through the city.

"Always." Mary giggled. "Are you on your way Sam?"

I smiled "Yeah I'm on my way. I'll be there in just a few more minutes. What about you?"

"I'm already there," Mary said matter of factly.

"Oooo... Do you love me that much?" There was a brief pause on the phone as I could tell she was blushing before she responded.

"Well... Of course." I smiled at that and was about to tease her more when I heard a deafening horn blare from my left. Weird... the sign says I'm free to walk. Whirling to the left, the only thing I saw in those final moments, was a terrified man, rows of crowded people, glass, and the headlights of a metro bus. All went black.

.

..

...

-2 minutes later.

PAIN. SO MUCH PAIN. EVERYTHING IN MY BODY HURTS SO MUCH. My eyes and mouth shot open and I started screaming. I was surrounded by various people, one of them I recognized as the driver but due to the pain, I couldn't care less.

"He's awake and he's started screaming! When's that damn ambulance getting here dammit!" A man screamed. Quietly in the background, I could hear a woman's voice.

"Sir, I need you to stay calm. The ambulance will be there in twenty minutes. Sir, can you describe them and tell what their injuries are?"

There was a pause before he resumed, "A kid, male, looks like he's about sixteen. He's bleeding in several places, and a bone is protruding from his left leg. I also suspect internal bleeding."

I couldn't take it anymore the pain is too overwhelming, my consciousness is starting to fade. I struggled a bit more before I faded to black.

.

..

...

I was moving. People yelled above me, I opened my eyes to see people pushing my stretcher through the halls. No sooner had I done that something was injected into me and I slowly drifted off again.

...

...

Reality shifted back all at once, a hospital room came into my view and the first thing I noticed, was the complete lack of movement of any of the doctors and nurses. One thing that was in motion, however, was a blue wormhole rotating above my head. As I sat there unable to breathe, move, or even speak, it slowly expanded until it was six feet in diameter. In the opening, an outline of a man started to come into focus. An old man with golden eyes and a grey beard looked down at me and opened his mouth to speak.

"Hello Sam, there something we need to discuss."

"Am I dead?" The man frowned, looking down for a moment before raising his gaze back at me.

"Yes Sam, you are. Sam... I have good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?"

"The good news." The man nodded before continuing.

"The good news is, your not going to Hell, only the gate to meet the Devil, and the bad news, is your not going to heaven either."

"Why?..." I croaked. I tried to move but my effort granted me nothing.

"Your soul is unique Sam, It's special, nothing big but until it goes back to normal, neither I nor the Devil can claim you."

"How long?" I asked.

"It's not really how long Sam, its what makes it special. However, there have been cases where it goes away, with time of course." I frowned, trying to rearrange my thoughts. "It's been pleasant Sam but I have others to see. Say hi to the Devil for me, okay?" God snapped his fingers and my world view skyrocketed down. Faster and faster until I reached a giant underground chasm, with a dark and wicked landscape. A bridge hung suspended in the air. At the end of the bridge, a large two-story double door sat occasionally creaking open, followed by screams.

My descent down through the chamber finally ended placing me to rest on the end of the bridge behind an extensive line of people of all ages and genders. I tried to think of what I needed to do, but before the thought even crossed my mind, another forced its way in; Walk... follow the line...
