39 They won't let this go

The evening has come and everything has been turning dark. Inside his room, Neil is lying on his bed, his mind wandering as he stares aimlessly on the ceilings.

"Mercy... huh?"

He didn't know what to think of it. Killing a person just because of some suspicion that they will do something to you in the future?

That kind of logic felt so strange to him. It's a cold thought process, and he didn't want to be like that.

"... I know this is stupid, but I have the luxury to worry about that."

He have everything he needs to survive. Food, shelter, and protection. So unlike the other people, he have all the time to think about morality and other useless stuffs.

He wonders if he didn't get his power to upgrade, will he also think that killing is normal, even if it's his fellow humans?

'I don't want to even imagine it.'

He shook his head before turning to the window.

The sun is setting. It seems like he have spent his hour just mulling about this thing.

"Right. I'll still stick to my principles. I'll try my best not to kill anyone." He clenches his fist with his expression turning grim. "If my hands were forced... then I think, I might just do it..."

He's reluctant but thinking about someone suddenly wrecking his whole building and harming those he is close with, he thinks he might see red.

That possibility is high, knowing what kind of era is this. So he wanted to prepare himself mentally.

"Right. It is unpleasant, but I have to prepare for that day to come..."

He really hopes it won't happen, but he knows it will happen.

He only have a small knowledge about this world. He didn't know if there are others who have powers that are more stronger than him, and if there is some faction out there who can possibly destroy everything he have.

"Right. I have to get stronger!" He glares at the setting sun, his heart filled with conviction.

~~o~~

On the outpost within the shallow parts of this forest, their leader is hurling every bad words he can think, making it obvious just how angry he is right now.

"Who is it!? Who the fuck did this!?"

The men by his side are just silent and unmoving. Their heads lowered and their shoulders hunched like they are trying not to be seen.

Only Michael, the humongous man with the shades, is just standing straight. His stance is unbending and strong.

"Michael!" The tall guy perks up. "Did you see anything?"

"Negative, sir!"

Brigg hurls another set of curses, feeling furious at this day. All of his plans has been gone just like that.

He have lost all of his workers, all the women were gone, even the only slave he have has been freed, and he have failed his mission.

The last one hurts the most. It's not anything materialistic, but it is his pride that was hit, and he felt it like a mortal blow.

Since his defeat from the hands of Mr. Fu, he have sworn not to be humiliated again. He have won every mission, and self-imposed trials after that day. Making sure to get all the rewards from the system and accumulating more strength to defeat Mr. Fu one day.

So this defeat is another stain on his mark. He hates being defeated like this.

'I got the fucking System! I don't like being shot on the foot like this!' He complains internally.

He have seen himself as something special. Having the System, which only one out of one million have, and a strong System at that, swells his ego to the mountains. He felt like the main character of a story, and anyone are just extras.

He is the one who dictates whether a person is a side character or just a mob he is going to kill. He loves being in charge of his own narrative.

The more he thinks about this complete slap in the face, the more he is getting furious.

He is very confident on his security. The defenses on the basement alone is enough to even stop someone who is an expert. Every part of his walls can detect every living beings, even if they are a ghost.

So the people easily escaping, and some of his men being knocked out without the alarms being ringed once is a major blow to his confidence. It can be said that his pride has been completely wipe off the floor.

"Michael. I want you to find them right now! I am sure they aren't that far!"

"Roger!"

"And as for you all, I want all of you to go along with him! Don't come back until you capture all of them!"

After a series of salute, he looks at his new mission.
