1 Chapter 1: Thomson

Nine Years ago, A portal appeared in the middle of Kento City. The Portal was connected to a world full of Humanoid Monsters and they invaded Earth.

After much difficulty, humans succeeded in defeating the invaders. But that was just the beginning.

Since the first appearance of the Portal, hundreds of other Portals appeared in various places. Each one led to a different world; filled with Werebeasts.

But along with this crisis came an opportunity. Humans on Earth started awakening supernatural abilities.

Thus the Ear of Superhuman began as the fight between the Humans and Werebeast continued.

......….

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Beep! Beep! Beep!

The alarm clock's beeping sound sounded throughout the room.

"Alright, alright, I'm awake!"

Poking his hand from under the blanket, Thomson tried to reach out and stop the clock.

After fumbling for a while, he got hold of the alarm clock and turned it off. Soon the beeping sound stopped.

But Thomson had no desire to wake up.

Around ten to fifteen minutes later, the alarm clock goes off once again.

Beep! Beep!

As the alarm started beeping again, Thomson crawled out of the blanket. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Thomson slowly rubbed his eyes.

Beep! Be…!

After a few moments of staring into nothingness, Thomson stopped the alarm clock.

Getting up, Thomson took a bath, ate his breakfast and headed out.

Leaving the house, he headed towards the Hunters guild.

Yesterday at noon, Thomson awakened his ability. In the middle of the day, he passed out and when he woke up, he started hallucinating. He saw colourful bubbles floating around him and the world all of a sudden started looking like a fairy tale.

After he came out of his hallucination, Thomson knew he had awakened his ability. Because what he experienced was the same thing, everyone reported experiencing it when they first awakened their abilities.

So, today he is going to the Hunters Guild to register his ability.

After walking for around fifteen minutes, Thomson reached the Hunters guild.

Walking inside the guild, he saw hunters in their hunting outfits, carrying a variety of weapons.

Minding his business, Thomson made his way toward one of the unoccupied front disks.

"Hi, How can I help you?"

The receptionist asked as she saw Thomson walking toward her.

"I would like to register myself," Thomson replied.

"Oh, that's great. Please follow me." The receptionist was surprised when she heard that Thomson awakened his ability. But she followed the procedure and led him toward the testing room.

'One person in six months, at this rate there wouldn't be enough Hunters to fight against Werebeasts.' While leading Thomson to the testing room, the receptionist sighed.

It's been nine years since people with abilities started appearing all over the world. Every day hundreds of humans would awaken supernatural abilities.

But around six months ago, the awakening suddenly came to a halt. The abilities humans awaken decreased from hundreds every day to a few in a month.

No one knew the reason behind it. It just happened and everyone in the world is trying to figure out the reason behind it.

In the past six months, new awakens have become as rare as the Phoenix feather and Unicorn horn.

In fact in Arvon City, Thomson is the first person to awaken his ability in the past six months.

Walking through the hallway the receptionist stopped before a door on the right.

"Here we are!" Opening the door to the testing room, the receptionist said.

After a small pause, Thomson followed the receptionist inside the testing room.

Walking inside the testing room, Thomson's eyes landed on the crystal ball sitting on the table.

'So, this is the testing ball created by the Rune Grandmaster Kai.' Looking at the crystal ball, Thomson thought to himself.

In the past nine years, a handful of humans have awakened an ability called Rune Inscribing. This ability allowed humans to gather Mana and inscribe symbols onto an object.

Each inscribed symbol holds a different function, some symbols can even give objects supernatural abilities.

Rune inscribing was such a wonder that many even suspect that the abilities humans awaken are a result of complex rune structures.

But humans haven't come too far with their study of Runes. All they know came from their self-learning and raiding a few Werebeast Worlds.

So, till to his day. It is nothing else but a theory.

The Testing Ball was an invention that Rune Grandmaster Kai came up with to test different abilities that humans awaken.

This football size ball can accurately guess a person's ability and even figure out hidden trails of the said ability.

Aside from that, the testing ball can also display all the stats of the human body.

Walking toward the crystal ball, Thomson placed both his onto the crystal ball.

Soon, the rainbow lines started glowing inside the crystal ball and Thomson felt an electric current pass through him.

"What the….." As Thomson felt the shock, he hurriedly took his hands off the crystal ball.

"Don't worry, everyone reacts the same the first time Mana courses through their bodies. But you will get used to it." The receptionist spoke when she saw what happened.

"Oh, Okay." Listening to the receptionist's words, Thomson once again put his hands back on the crystal ball.

"Oh, you don't have to do that. It's over, in fact, your results are already out." The receptionist said as she placed a sheet of paper beside the crystal ball.

When she placed down the paper, a bright blue light came out of the crystal ball, projecting onto the paper.

As soon as the light came in contact with the paper, words started appearing on it.

Before long the paper was filled with Thomson's overall stats.

At the top of the paper was the Name of the ability Thomson awakened as well as his main stats. Next, we're his sub-stats and further down was a note about his ability.

'The way this crystal ball works is cool…. But it seems like my life is destined to go down the drain.' Looking at the name of his ability, Thomson was disheartened.

'This was my only chance. What am I going to do now? Without a powerful ability, how can I have any hope of getting by revenge.'

Staring blanking into nothingness, Thomson got lost in his thoughts.

'His attributes are quite strong for someone who awakened a non-combat ability.' Thinking to herself, the receptionist looked at Thomson.

Seeing Thomson's blank expression and feeling of sombreness in the atmosphere, the receptionist didn't know what to say.

She had no idea why out of a sudden, he had a mood swing.

"Hi, are you alright?" Not knowing what caused the sudden change in Thomson's mood, she asked.

"Ah….Come again?" Coming back to his senses, Thomson asked. Just now, he was lost in his thoughts and didn't hear what the receptionist said.

"It's nothing." Seeing Thomson come back to his senses, the receptionist didn't ask what was going through his head.

'Shouldn't he be happy that he awakened his ability and became a Superhuman? Does it matter if the ability he awakened is suitable for combat or not? Some don't even have the opportunity he got.'

The receptionist thought to herself as she felt Thomson was being ungrateful for the gift he received.

"Your ID, please?" Putting the matter of Thomson being ungrateful aside, the receptionist decided to do her work. Instead of envying others.

"My ID? For what?" Thomson had no idea why she needed his ID card.

"To register you in the Awakens database." The receptionist was surprised by Thomson's sudden reaction. Shouldn't it be common sense that you need some sort of identification document to register yourself in the Awakens database?

"Oh, for that!" After the receptionist's reminder, Thomson remembered and took out his ID card from his wallet.

Handing over the ID card, Thomson felt his heart tighten and he felt anxious. Subconsciously, he grabs hold of the card with full force.

As Thomson handed over his ID card, the receptionist extended her hand to take it. When she was about to take the card from Thomson's hand, she felt his grip tighten.

"Sir….." Listening to the receptionist's voice, Thomson got hold of himself and let go of the card.

'What's his problem.' Thinking to herself, the receptionist took Thomson's ID card and headed toward the computer sitting in the corner of the room.

Turning on the computer, she sat on the chair and started entering the results of Thomson's status and ability.

"Sigh*….. Let's see." Since it was her first time doing something like this, the receptionist was a little nervous.
