1 Chapter 1

Hui Zhong's POV

I woke up smiling to another bright and cold day in my warm and comfy bed before remembering I had chores to do and begrudgingly got out of bed with a sigh, taking a quick shower and changing before heading downstairs for a quick breakfast. After my quick breakfast I went out to do my chores.

Watering my crops and heading to the woods to fetch mushrooms with my precious notebook to keep a log of what I collected before coming back and enjoying a good classic potato and beef stew as my reward for a long day of work.

'This is my life for now ' I smiled as I thought to myself quietly. I finally gotten changed and went downstairs to munch on some sourdough with cream cheese and a wonderful cup of tea as I admired the pictures that adorned my cream-coloured walls.

'I miss him so much, I wish everything was reversed and I could be happier.' I sighed as I finished breakfast and went out to my small farm which had a few potatoes, carrots and sweet potatoes that contrasted the green and dark forest surrounding it.

I wished for it to stay as long as I could preserve it to be this way, I wish I had done this earlier so that I could keep myself sane for a while.................... Thanks to that asshole's way of manipulation and cruelty, I could never achieve that.

Even if he ruined things for me, I have already been in retirement for 10 years and nothing could have been better.

I sighed and looked out of my window as I got ready to go out only to realise something was off. I grabbed my rifle and loaded it full, ensuring I brought spare and headed out cautiously, rogues were a common sight here and it only strengthened my resolve in keeping a good sense of security around the area.

Grabbing my basket and straw hat, I headed out quietly with the hope that things would be quiet as they usually were, keeping my hopes up of not expecting any action.

I headed out, scavenging the forest area and found some edible mushrooms and berries happily grabbing them and tossing it into my basket without thinking twice since I familiarised myself with the ability to distinguish edible from non-edible varieties after living here for a decade.

As I finished picking a sufficient amount, I got up and turned to leave when I heard something rustle and a sudden gust of wind brush past me with the familiar speed of a wolf seeing as I could recognise that familiar sensation after being around so many for so long.

'Something is up' I thought to myself as I decided to hide in a small space in the trunk of the tree in front of me while peeking through a small hole to see what was happening.

From the obscured peephole of my hiding spot I saw something terrible happening, something that I have witnessed too often and would never let happen again as I swore to myself quietly.

A burnt orange wolf with blue eyes that was noticeably pregnant that was being surrounded by 6 rogues that were either grey or brown with piercing brown eyes. I knew they intended to kill the wolf and no way would I let another innocent be slaughtered again.

I saw red and as if it could read my emotions my rifle clicked and all of a sudden one rogue started howling in pain as it fell to the floor bleeding heavily from its abdomen where I had shot it from my hiding spot.

I ran out from my hiding spot yelling as I proceeded to kill 3 more swiftly with my rifle smirking and then realised that the remaining 2 had leapt onto the wolf and were mercilessly attacking the poor thing.

"THAT'S ENOUGH!!!" I screamed as I picked up a rusty metal pole nearby and charged in, kicking one away and stabbing the other with the pole before I drew the pole back and drove it through its left eye, effectively slowing it before shooting it to ensure it died.

I turned to the other with a smirk as I clicked the rifle once more and swiftly ended its pathetic existence as it let out a whimper before becoming silent.

I sighed as I turned to see the wolf who was out cold and yet unconsciously protective of its unborn pups.

It was probably was afraid of me but I couldn't let it die like that now could I? I may be a cruel hero but I won't let innocent lives perish so easily.

I approached it and carried back to my house, making sure to be gentle with it. I opened the door and laid it on my couch and placing my blanket to keep it warm as I went to get medical supplies , knowing full well that things could be messy soon if it didn't go back to it's pack................
