Painful disagreement

Ethan stared at Chloe with his mouth agape as she looked up at him, no doubt waiting for him to say something. He knew that he was supposed to be on his way already, as it was already getting late, but his feet remained locked into position. He tried to say something or form words, but his mouth stubbornly remained hanging open, and he could not form any word, talk more of a sentence.

“Um, are you going to say something, Ethan?” Chloe asked, looking extremely uncomfortable.

That was the problem. He had expected her to look thrilled, or even overjoyed, but there she was looking very uncomfortable and even a little bit afraid and sad. He knew it! He had known it all along. There was someone in her life. He was surprised at the sharp stab of pain that pierced through his chest as they stood there watching themselves.

“Wh…when did you regain your memory?” He finally asked.

Chloe averted her gaze once more at this question, the uncomfortable look intensifying on her features.
