" What do you mean, you don't know?"
" Calm down, Dr. Parker. I'm doing everything I can to find her."
" Don't tell me to calm down! Maya is being used as a meat suit by some kind of parasitic creature. One you brought into the lab without employing any kind of safety protocols." She said.
I was in my office running search algorithms to find her, when Dr. Mary Parker burst into my office. Apparently they had become fast friends after the first time they met. Which wasn't that much of a surprise.
After all, both of them were brilliant scientists who worked in similar fields, so it wasn't strange they would have become closer over the years. She practically blew a gasket as soon as she found out it was Maya who was taken.
My efforts in trying to locate her using magic were proving to be useless, since I needed her blood to do a location spell, and all of the samples we had on hand were burned up when the lab went up in flames.
She was right though. I screwed up, and in my haste to try and save Rogue and go back to make sure Jean wasn't in danger. I didn't account for a psychic parasite.
It could have infected any of us. And, unfortunately, the sensors couldn't pick up on such things, and since both Dr. Hansen and Rogue were registered in the system. Other than the fire alarms, most of the security defenses weren't activated to begin with.
'I'll have to update the ward matrix for the whole building to account for such attacks in the future. The system wouldn't be perfect exactly, but it's better than nothing. '
Mary was standing in front of me shaking furiously in anger. It has been a while since I talked to her or her husband for that matter.
Their decision to not go back, in order to protect their son, must have been a difficult one. It's been years since they saw him. Opting to let him live with his aunt and uncle as his guardians.
After all, the people who tried to kill them were still at large. I had a few suspects in mind, mainly Hydra.
But, with the assassin who tried to kill them dead, and the jet exploding and sinking into the Pacific. The trail had quickly gone cold. Tracking down who ordered the hit was akin to searching for a needle in a stack of needles.
I offered protection for them and Peter, but they said they wanted him to live a normal life without having to constantly look over their shoulders dreading the possibility of another assassination attempt.
It was safer if whoever ordered their assassination thought they were dead. Since, any contact with Peter could potentially blow their cover.
They were Shield agents alright, with the all paranoia that came along with it.
It wasn't all bad thought. With Sophie's help, we managed to set up a fake trust fund, that was supposedly left to Peter after his parent's 'death'. They made a deal with me to set it up out of their paychecks for working at Cypher labs, so, at least Peter and his family wouldn't have to struggle with money. They were pretty much financially set.
" I admit I made a mistake, but I had no way of knowing something like this could happen. I had to go back and retrieve Jean as well as make sure Kitty and Illyana were safe. Rogue almost died, so don't think I'm not taking this seriously."
She sighed, " I'm sorry. I'm just worried about her. Maya... has been their for me. In more ways than one. Richard threw himself into his work, after what happened and there weren't many people who could understand, or I could even tell for that matter. It's been... tough, not being able to see Peter, hold him..."
She started to tear up, and before I knew it she started crying." I'm just... I.. I"
Mary hadn't noticed, but Richard was standing outside the door listening to every word she said.
It was my guess. He also wanted to talk to me about what happened, but ended up listening to his wife tell me about how much not seeing Peter was tearing her up on the inside, and Maya's disappearance only exasperated those feelings she's been trying to bottle up for a long time.
< It's okay Richard you can come in. You should come in. > I communicated telepathically.
With my enhanced hearing, I could hear him taking a deep breath, before pushing the door open.
As soon as he saw Mary though, his eyes softened and he quickly embraced her.
"Shushhh...it's okay. It's okay. I'm here. I'm sorry Mary. I should have noticed how hard this was on you. I was hurting too, and without meaning too I drifted away... I.."
Seeing as he had it handled, I decided to make myself scarce and teleported out of my office. They didn't seem to even notice my disappearance as I opened a portal to my own personal lab.
As soon as I arrived, Sophie informed me that the modified Quinjet I had stolen... ahem borrowed from Shield was arriving along with Illyana and a few of the Meta-humans we rescued.
I opened a portal to the landing area right outside of town.
It was an old abandoned military base. I bought it, and afterr a few upgrades like: building a state of the art training and housing facility. It served as a place of rehabilitation and training for those who needed it.
Some opted to stay on base and became instructors themselves, while others either went and found a job at Cypher Solutions looking for a more mundane lifestyle.
I saw Shang-Chi and Colossus standing next to the runway, waiting for the kids' arrival.
Standing at an armored 7 foot 5 inches huge mass of solid organic steel. In his armored form, Colossus was highly resistant to most forms of bodily harm.
Piotr had the ability to shatter pretty much anything with his armoured fists and most Earthly weapons were useless in front of him.
His armor was capable of withstanding ballistic penetration, including that of a 110 millimeter Howitzer shell. He could survive a collision with a loaded, one-ton flatbed truck at 100 miles per hour or an explosion of 450 pounds of TNT.
He could even survive extremes of temperature from 70 degrees above absolute zero (-390 degrees Fahrenheit) to approximately 9000 Fahrenheit.
Even in human form, his strength was tremendous – he can unroot most tree stumps with his bare hands and a length of steel chain. His metallic body likewise seems quite resistant to most magics – even magic who do not have a specific vulnerability to cold iron and the like.
Which made him very good at resisting corruption, enabling him to utilize Cyttrok's gem to such a high degree.
Because, even with the protections I had put in place. One couldn't account for every single possibility when binding such a powerful artifact.
He has been also intensively training in hand to hand and judo with Shang-Chi and would often spar with Wolverine.
I heard they were drinking buddies, which was suiting considering their personalities and age.
Logan was surrounded by kids, back at the X-mansion, while Piotr didn't know many guys other than me and Shang-chi.
Shang-Chi on the other hand sported a much more compact physique. Standing at a more average 5'10.
That being said, it would be foolish to underestimate him.
Raised as an heir to an insidious secret society and named Shang-Chi, the "rising and advancing of the spirit." In a hidden, ancient fortress in China, he became adept at both a multitude of martial arts and philosophical disciplines, which forged him into a living weapon.
A martial arts master without peer in the world. His use of Chi, aided him not only in combat, but also in commanding his emotions in tense situations. This pronounced calm even allowed him to dodge bullets.
I walked up to them, and greeted them. Shang-chi acknowledged me with a nod, while Piotr turned towards me.
"Comrade Douglas. ." He acknowledged.
I chuckled," Always nice to see you Piotr."
" I feel the same, but I must admit I'm slightly, how do you say? Cross with you." He said.
I tilt my head in confusion. " Why's that?"
He frowns," I don't appreciate you, taking my sister on such dangerous mission. Especially without my permission. "
I shrugged," Don't know what to tell you big guy, but I wasn't the one who took her with me. She snuck on board all by herself. Piotr. Illyana isn't a child anymore. Worse, she's a teenager with the ability to teleport. "
His frown deepened," If she doesn't want to be treated as a child, then she mustn't act like one. Sneaking around and following you on such dangerous mission, only speaks of how much she still needs to mature. I will speak to her. "
The plane lands and the Quinjet's door opens up, revealing Illyana and about a dozen Meta-human preteens.
A few of them were quite tense, while the rest were busy staring at Colossus's giant metallic form.
" All right everyone, follow me towards the hangar. Let's get you all cleaned up and get you something to eat. " Shang-chi said.
At the mention of food and seeing as the people who rescued were like them, a few of the older kids relaxed a bit.
It didn't take long before Shang-chi and a few of the instructors and caretakers on site cajoled them to the hanger.
The hanger had a hidden entrance to the living quarters, which was fitted with luxurious rooms and a spacious training area, as well as a bunch of facilities for them to enjoy.
The batch of kids we received were the ones who didn't have a home, or simply ran away due to abuse. So, it was understandable they weren't quick to trust, even after seeing their rescuers were Meta-humans as well.
Gambit extended a hand courteously and helped Illyana out of the plane. His arm flew around her shoulders as soon as she was out, as he tried to hug her close to his side. Without missing a beat Illyana pushed him out of the plane. Sending him tumbling to the ground.
"My pleasure, cherie." He grunted.
Illyana, offended that he was trying to take advantage of her merely snorted and stepped over him. Stalking towards Piotr.
"Can you believe that?" He complained, looking at me.
" You're lucky she didn't stab you." I said.
"The way I see it, if she didn't stab me, must mean she likes me." He countered.
Illyana who was talking with her brother, was growing more agitated by the second. I didn't need enhanced hearing to figure out what they were talking about. And, judging by the way it was going I wasn't surprised, when Illyana suddenly created a portal and jumped through it.
" Well, that can't be good." I said out loud.
