1 Date of the Century

She had never minded the height of men. Her preference? Well, she did not have any physical preference or requirements for them as well. She only minded intelligence but, hey, a girl can always dream right? She grew up listening to her girlfriends describe their ideal men.

"A man must be well-built!"

"He must be tall … and have lots of hair",

"I want to be swept off my feet by a blue-eyed blond male,"

"Oh!, I want a Prince!"

"He must be rich!"

"Not just rich, he should be able to buy me anything I want!"

Well, the list just went on and on. She had heard every single requirement of what an ideal man was supposed to be. But, for her, those requirements were nought. She just wanted a friend. Her mother had always told her that,

"Marry your best friend, my dear daughter because, the love, the tingles and the overwhelming emotions will definitely pass". These were words, her mother had imprinted in her mind from childhood, and she'd like to believe that her mother, like any other in the world was the best.

"She was the best in everything, and she raised her up to be the best version of herself, and for this, she would forever be proud of herself and of her mother, of course".

These were the thoughts that run through her head that fateful evening before she went to bed.

Amanda mulled these thoughts over and diligently planned her itinerary for the next day. Amanda had a foolish smile pasted on her face the whole day and told every person, including those who did not ask, about her impending date with her best friend, Eddy. She was twenty-two years and had known Eddy for about fourteen years at that time.

"So, what's the plan?" her friend, Tasha asked her,

"Eddy left everything for me to plan and I am so excited!" Amanda exclaimed while she thrashed on her bed enthusiastically. They were in their shared hired apartment. The place had two small bedrooms and they shared the bath and kitchen spaces as well as the hall. They had been in a similar place when they were students, but they had shared one bedroom then, so they considered this apartment a luxury.

They had both graduated from university that year and were still looking for a job. With the current avalanche of students eagerly looking for jobs, it was proving to be a futile effort for both even though they graduated with honours in their respective classes.

Amanda was a plump looking girl and very curvaceous. She had earned herself the nickname 'Coca Cola bottle' because of her unusually slim middle. From afar, she looked like an hourglass, but Amanda never paid much attention to her looks. For her, it was more about books and her favourite saying was, "Books over, looks!".

Her roommate Tasha wasn't much different from her but was a little on the slimmer side and as curvy too. The main difference between the two girls was that Tasha maintained her looks and spared no expense on that. For instance, Tasha wouldn't mind using her last cash on trendy clothes with nothing left for meals, but she was brainy as hell. The two girls were a wonderful duo and did almost everything together, but they were never interested in men at all. This made them equally hated by both sexes. The males, because they could not get them, and the females hated them because the men they liked, only had eyes for these two.

"I thought you said Eddy invited you out for a date?"

"Why would he allow you to plan for your first date?" Tasha asked with a voice laced with curiosity.

"Oh, don't be such a downer!" Amanda said in response.

"I love doing it!"

"And it gives me control over where we will go and what we will do",

"IT'S THE DATE OF THE CENTURY!!" Amanda shouted in excitement… again

"shhhhh", Tasha beseeched her just as they heard a knock on their door,

Tasha rolled her eyes and mouthed, "See, It's too late now",

She hurriedly opened the door and apologised even before the person could talk,

"We apologise, we will keep it down,"

"You better do so," a voice replied.

Tasha closed the door and the two girls giggled like crazy. They had been through this routine, uncountable times. Mostly, it had been Tasha as Amanda spent the greater part of her day at Eddy's residence. The two were inseparable. Where one would see Amanda, Eddy would be in the vicinity somewhere. When the girls calmed down, Tasha asked with all seriousness,

"I know that Eddy is your best friend,"

"But you have also loved him for a long time as well,"

"I don't think that its right for you to plan your first date,"

"Considering that he invited you out for it,"

"I'm glad he did though, I was starting to think that the guy was a monk!" Tasha stated resolutely.

"I- I understand that you look out for me Tasha, but it's okay because no two relationships are the same and I know for a fact that Eddy loves me too,"

She shyly looked down and said with a red face, "He kissed me yesterday."

"OMG!"

"You sly girl."

"How could you hide this from me?" Tasha asked with clear mischief in her eyes.

"Spill everything!" she demanded and sat right in front of Amanda so that she could read all the emotions that pass over her face.

Amanda started twisting her fingers in front of her and said, "He told me that he had a surprise for me …"

"Uh-huh," Tasha prompted with her hands,

"He also said that I should dress up really nice for it … And he kissed me", Amanda whispered the last part.

"Thumbs up my girl," Tasha said with a huge smile on her face.

"So now, I want details", she added,

"How was the kiss?",

"Was it a French kiss?"

Amanda, "…."
