The Thorns

Nicholette's POV

Until now, I still cannot accept that mom is dead. I am hear at my room still thinking about what mom said to me before she died. I cannot understand it completely but there is only one thing I remembered.

"Thorns..."

FLASHBACK.

It was 2 o'clock in the morning when I suddenly wanted to have my usual midnight snack. As I stride my way to our kitchen, I heard someone's footsteps downstairs. I hide between the pillars and peek to see who are they. As the house is so dark, I cannot see the face of the person who broke inside our house, but one thing is for sure, they are not thief; they are here to kill somebody. I ran towards Lai room to ask for help when I heard mom's voice.

"I see that you came here to meet me. Come inside." Mom said. Wait, do mom know him? The guy did not answer, instead he just went inside mom's office.

I walked towards mom's office to peek and listen what would they talk about.

"The syndicate want you to be dead." The guy said. His voice was so raspy like he was not talking that often.

"I know, but before you do your agenda here, I would like to tell you that I don't have the documents."

"What the hell are you saying?!" I saw the mom stood up and approached the cabinets, he created a huge mess inside the room and mom just let him be, sitting at her swivel chair.

"It can't be! You and your husband were definitely held those documents, until the day your husband died." He firmly said, thing that made me shocked. They killed father? I thought it was all because of car accident?

"Don't you dare say that word again, I will not anyone hear any of this!" mom said. The man approached mom and bring out a knife.

"Then, give me those documents!"

"I said, I do not have them." Mom said. The man put down the knife and went back to the couch. He opened his bag and give something to mom.

"Then, I do not have any problem anymore." He said.

"What do you mean?"

"The syndicate wanted you to be dead after I collect all those documents, if you don't have them then I do not have any agenda with you." The man said then stood up, he approached the door. I ran quickly away from the door then went inside my bedroom.

I lie down and think about what I saw, so many questions running into my mind and I cannot come up with any answer just by myself. I need to talk to mom tomorrow about it.

An hour or two passed, I still cannot sleep. I cannot wait to ask mom about it, I stood up then went out of my room. I walked towards mom's office when I saw the door not being shut properly. I opened it then I saw mom with Katana being pierced at her chest, I froze I don't know what to do, I wanted to shout by there is no voice coming out from my mouth. Then, I saw mom's hand moved, I went at her then check her pulse.

"Mom! Mom, are you okay? We need to call for help." I was about to leave when she grabbed my hand. She mumbles something, I cannot hear her that is why I moved my ear closer to her mouth to hear her voice more.

"Thorns, you need to be careful."

"Mom, what is thorns?"

"Thorn will not let you be free."

"Mom? Mom! Answer me! You cannot die like that!" I am scared, Lai, where are you?

"MOM! Please open your eyes! I will call for help! You will be okay! MOM!!" my tears kept on falling out of my eyes, my hands and knees are shaking. I cannot think straight. I saw mom not moving any inch anymore, I muster all my last energy to ran out of the room then ask for help.

"Help!! Mom is in danger!" I called out our staff, all of them ran towards the office and check on mom.

"Sorry Lette, but Ma'am Lucille is dead." I can't believe what am I hearing right now. I just fall on my knees and cried silently. Please someone, get my twin.

FLASHBACK ENDS.

*Knocks*

The door opened and I saw Lai at the entrance holding tray of food, my appetite is still low these days as I can still see mom's blood running out.

"Lette, you need to eat, your body needs nutrients for you to continue investigating." She said. I think I need to tell Lai about it.

"Lai.. mom told me something before she died.." Lai look at me shocked, but still waiting the next thing I am going to say.

"I can't remember it well but I think she said thorns" I saw Lai suddenly stared blankly, her hands are shaking, thing that is not usual about her.

"L-Lai are you okay?"

"I-I'm o-okay. E-eat your food okay? I need to do something" she answered then walked out of my room. I think she knows about it.

Nicholai's POV

No! it can't be! It's been 10 years and I don't think they still come for us.

Flashback...

Bordeaux, France March 01 XX19

"Monsieur Hubert! Où es-tu?! Sortir!" the man shouted then fires numerous gun shots. (Where are you? Come out!)

"Nicholai! Come on lai! We need to escape!" mom and dad rushed into my bed and carried me.

"M-mom.. D-dad.. what's happening?" It's still midnight but I hear several gun shots all over our house.

"Don't worry honey. We'll get through this." Mom said as we reached the center hall.

"vous y êtes! arrêter de courir juste me donner les fichiers" files? What is he talking about? (There you are! stop running just give me the files)

"Je ne sais pas ce que vous êtes parler! laisse nous partir !" my dad pleaded. (I don't know what you're talking about! Let us go!)

*Bang!*The big guy fires and my father got shot at his knees. All of the other men at pointing a gun at my father.

"Lucille! Let Lai get out here!" my mom looked at me with worried eyes

."But! I can't let you stay here by yourself!" mom shouted as her tears run down. I'm crying. I can't do anything.

"Shut it! Are letting Lai to die here?!" dad said then tossed something. It's a small remote control. My mother gets it and run.

"Lai!" I looked at dad and he said something under his breath after he got shot. I can't understand all of it but I am sure of one thing. Dad said...THORNS.

Flashback ends.

Lette did not know anything about it, we said that dad died because of car accident, so I'm sure she heard the word for the first time.
