Chapter 47 - What A Wet Dog Smell!

Enid hid the necklace in the palm of her hand and stared at Ethan angrily.

"No! That necklace has caused enough trouble already! I'm throwing it in the trash!" Enid said, throwing the necklace in the kitchen trash.

"Mom..." Ethan said, frustrated. "You don't need all that, stop bullshitting!". He added.

"Bullshit? We've had enough fights about this!" Enid said.

"If you'd just tell me the truth, we wouldn't fight anymore! Ethan said, irritated.

"Can you stop talking nonsense for a second? Enid said, raising her voice.

Enid bent down and picked up the garbage bag. She started walking out of the house, where there was a garbage dumpster near their house. Enid threw the garbage bag into the dumpster.

"Why did you take me away from Hayden?". Ethan shouted from the doorway of their house.

"What's up?" Enid turned around, infuriated.

"I said I already know! You're just making it worse!" Ethan said.

"If you already know everything, then why are you asking me?" Enid questioned.

"I don't know everything. I know part of the story!" Ethan said, collecting himself.

"I'm trying to protect you! Just live your life without going after that shit, Ethan!". Enid said angrily, as she stared him deep in the eyes. "Now go to school! I don't want to hear about any of this anymore!". Enid said irritated.

"Fine!" Ethan said, putting his backpack on his back and walking towards the school.

"Don't you want a ride?". Enid asked, watching Ethan walk away.

Ethan just kept walking, ignoring what Enid was saying.

Then he heard his mother's car start up and her getting out, driving past Ethan. As the car turned the corner, Ethan turned and ran toward the trash can, looking for the trash bag where the necklace would be.

He threw the backpack on the ground and started pulling the garbage bags out, making a mess in front of his house, and scattering the garbage on the sidewalk.

It was then that a shiny silver chain fell out of one of the garbage bags, amidst the food scraps.

Ethan took the necklace and put it in his pocket. Then he went into his house and returned with a shovel and a broom, to pick up the trash from the sidewalk. This way, Enid would not suspect that he had taken the necklace from the garbage.

After taking out the trash, Ethan went upstairs to the bathroom to take a quick shower and clean his necklace which smelled funny, got dressed, and walked back to school, knowing that he would probably be late.

Then the day passed and the end of school came.

Tyler gave Ethan, Bella, Angela and Mike a ride to the beach, while the other students took another car.

When they arrived, everyone got out of the car and started putting on their wetsuits.

"Are you excited, Ethan?" Mike asked, with a huge smile on his face.

"Oh, I don't think I'll be able to dive... I didn't bring a wetsuit!". He replied, feeling a little relieved, since it was so cold.

"What the heck! I brought extra wetsuits! You can take it!". Mike replied, patting Ethan on the back.

"Oh cool! You can go, man! I'll get dressed with you in a minute." Ethan said, with a smile on his face, trying to throw Mike off.

After a few minutes, Ethan remained wrapped in a blanket next to Bella and Angela, while the others got dressed.

"That's freezing!" Mike said, shivering.

"I'm going in the water, you up for it?" Tyler asked Ethan, who was bundled up next to Bella.

"I don't know if it's worth it anymore." Eric said, uncomfortable with the cold.

"We came all this way! At least one dip!". Jessica insisted, helping Mike into his wetsuit.

"I don't want any more!" Eric said, shivering with cold.

"You guys are babies!". Jessica said, laughing.

It was then that Ethan began to smell a weird smell approaching, as if some animals were nearby. Ethan began to feel a strange sensation, like an animal hunting its prey.

From a distance, he could see three guys approaching.

"Bella!" Jacob said, ignoring Ethan and Angela's presence.

Jacob was tall and strong. He had long hair and tanned skin. The other guys were a little taller and had the same features.

"Oh hi! Guys, this is Jacob!" Bella said, introducing Jacob.

"Hi guys!" Jacob said, not caring that much until he looked at Ethan.

Jacob stood still for a few seconds, staring into Ethan's bright yellow eyes, while making an expression of confusion. Ethan continued eating the candy Bella had offered him, ignoring Jacob's stares.

"What is it, Jacob?" Bella said, watching Jacob act strange.

"Who is this guy?". Jacob asked seriously, without blinking.

"I'm Ethan. Nice to meet you!". Ethan replied, standing up and extending his hand to Jacob.

Jacob stared at Ethan's hand for a few seconds and refused to shake it, as he tried to smell Ethan, just by sniffing the air.

The other guys who were with Jacob also started to stare at Ethan in a strange way, as if they were suspicious of him.

Ethan then started sniffing his own shirt.

"What are you doing?" Angela asked Ethan.

"I don't know, don't you guys smell something weird? I smell like a... wet dog!". Ethan said, sniffing the sleeve of his blouse, teasing Jacob.

Angela and Bella started trying to smell their own blouses, searching for the smell. Jacob looked at his friends, a little annoyed and confused.

"I thought it might be me, sorry!". Ethan added, giving Jacob a gentle little smile and sitting down next to Bella again.

"What are you doing here? Following me?" Bella asked Jacob, breaking the awkward mood.

"You're on my reservation, remember?" Jacob asked, trying to look for a place to sit next to Bella, but failing. "Are you going surfing?" He added.

"Oh, definitely not!". Bella replied, resting her head on Ethan's shoulder as she finished eating the candy she had in her hands.

Jacob stared at Ethan with an annoyed look on his face; he seemed to be jealous of Bella. Ethan didn't feel anything for Bella, and he knew she didn't feel anything for him either, but he didn't mind resting his head on her head as he looked at Jacob, just to spite him.

"Why don't you guys stay here and keep Bella and Ethan company? The guy she invited didn't agree to come." Jessica said, a little saddened by the news, since Bella was now close to Ethan.

"Who did she invite?" Eric asked, indignant.

"She invited Edward!". Angela said, laughing.

Bella ducked her head, embarrassed.

"Oh, she was trying to be nice! Edward's all creepy, she just wanted to get him in the mood!". Ethan said, giving Bella a little nudge on the shoulder to cheer her up, which caused Jacob to let out a small smile from the corner of his mouth, for Ethan teasing Edward.

"Yes! The guy is very creepy!" Mike said, walking over to them.

"Absolutely!". Jacob's friends said.

"Do you guys know him?". Bella asked, curious.

"Cullens don't come here!". They replied, realizing they had said too much.

"Why?" Ethan asked, insisting.

"It's none of your business!". Jacob replied.

"Oh, I want to know too!". Bella said, frustrated.

Jacob then approached her and said, "It's just a silly old horror story. You don't need all that!".

"Then tell me!". Bella replied, with a dull smile on her face.

"Can you take a walk with me while I tell it?". Jacob said, holding out his hand for Bella to hold.

Bella looked with a dull smile at Ethan and stood up, ignoring Jacob's hand, but going after him.
