29 Chapter 29 - Should I Step In?

"Right!" Ethan replied, looking across the cafeteria at Alice, who was heading to her class while chatting with her brothers.

Ethan went to math class, but stayed quiet the whole class, paying attention.

So, time passed, and the bell rang indicating that class was over.

Ethan left the class looking for where Mike would be, so they could leave together, but halfway there, Bella appeared in front of him, with a confused expression.

"There, since when do you talk to them?" She asked, as if in an interrogation.

"Huh? With the Cullens?" Ethan asked, playing dumb.

"Yes! I've never seen you talk to them...". She said, as the two walked towards the exit of the high school.

"Oh, Alice is my classmate in biology class. You never noticed?". He replied naturally.

"Yeah, I've seen it, but have you two become that close? I mean, it hasn't even been a week since you talked to her...". Bella asked, looking a little jealous.

"Why? Do you want to sit with her too?". Ethan asked, being intrusive.

"What? Oh, it's not that! I just wanted to know...". Bella said, looking away.

"Tell me the truth... Who are you interested in over there?". Ethan asked, laughing.

"What?" Bella said, turning red.

"You think I didn't see you exchanging glances with Edward in the cafeteria?". Ethan said, reporting that it was obvious.

Bella's eyes widened, and she turned red, trying to look away.

"I wasn't exchanging glances with him... We just sat together in biology class, that's all!". She said, stuttering, trying to pull herself together.

Ethan stopped and looked at her face, clenching his eyelashes, doubting what Bella had just said.

"Well, actually I...." Bella started to say, however something interrupted her in mid-speech:

"Hey Ethan!". Mike shouted from across the hall. Bella went quiet at the same instant and started looking for her headphones in her blouse.

Ethan lifted the gaze that was on Bella toward Mike, who quickened his pace to reach his friend.

The three walked until they found their group of friends gathered at the front of the school talking.

"Ae Bella..." Eric said, heading toward her, but Bella started walking alone toward her truck, headphones in her ear.

"You better give up on her, Eric! Bella doesn't seem like the kind of girl who goes to the prom...". Angela said, trying to console her friend.

"And if she was, she probably wouldn't call you! You're too short." Mike said jokingly, sticking his hand into Eric's packet of potato chips.

"Get out man!" Eric said, taking the package of potato chips away from Mike's mother, who was already all greasy.

They started talking about random things, until Jessica nudged Ethan's arm, asking him to come closer to her. Ethan was a little put off by this, but decided to walk over to her.

Jessica then stood on tiptoe, trying to whisper something in Ethan's ear, who ducked a little to hear what she had to say.

"I need to tell you something important...can we talk later?". She said, with puppy dog eyes.

"In person?" Ethan asked.

"Yes, can you come over to the house today? It's something important.". She replied, shyly.

"I made an appointment with Mike for him to come home, but I can call you later if you want. What do you think?" He asked.

Jessica was a little discouraged by the answer, but confirmed with her head still looking at him.

"Fine!" Ethan replied, without much blinking." Oh yeah, where's Tyler? I needed to turn in the history paper he forgot on his desk." Eric asked, looking around.

"Oh, he's in his dad's car. He's probably driving around, but he said he'd be back. Angela said, fiddling with her cell phone.

Suddenly, Ethan felt his body freeze. He remembered the scene that was about to happen. Bella would be crushed by Tyler's car. He remembered that Edward would save Bella without much effort, but his fear was that reality would change and Bella would actually be crushed.

- What do I do? Shit, this needs to happen for them to have a relationship, but if she gets crushed, I'll never forgive myself," Ethan began to think, staring at Bella, who was looking at Edward at that moment.

"Hey, Bella, what are you doing?" He shouted, drawing her close to them.

"Oh, I'm just reading. She replied, with a wry smile on her face and holding up her book, looking away from Edward.

Ethan began to hear the sound of a car approaching from afar. It was probably Tyler racing his father's car.

"Come stay with us."

"Oh, I'm fine!" Bella replied, putting her headphones back on.

- Fuck it, I need to make sure she's okay - Ethan thought as he quickened his pace towards Bella. - I just hope I don't die along with her.

It was then that the scene began to unfold:

Tyler drove quickly into the parking lot.

A car, which was parked, started to move backwards, almost hitting Tyler's car, who got scared and turned the wheel immediately. The car began to speed toward Bella.

Ethan began to feel his heart race and his whole body heat up. His hands started tingling and shaking, he felt like he was going to explode.

Within seconds, Ethan was running towards Bella, unable to think straight. He hugged her head protectively with his body and stretched out his arm, trying to hold the car back, so it wouldn't hit them both.

It was then that Ethan felt the wind from the car whipping his hair and could feel Bella's desperate breathing, her eyes closed, along with a terrible thump on his arm.

Ethan slowly opened his eyes.

As he opened his eyes, Ethan saw Edward standing in front of him, holding the car in one hand, staring into Ethan's eyes, with a confused and slightly frightened expression.

Ethan looked to the side and saw that his arm was completely black, holding the car with the shadow particles. Ethan's eyes were glowing, and he felt a terrible pain in his arm.

- Shit! - Ethan thought, looking at Edward.

He let go of Bella, who was looking at them both, startled, and lowered his arm, causing the shadow particles to disappear from his arm and the pain to increase more. Ethan could feel his eyes watering from the pain he began to feel.

Edward continued to stare at Ethan for a few seconds, ignoring Bella's presence, and took off running, before a crowd of students approached the car desperate to know if the two were okay.

"Ethan, Bella... I'm so sorry! I freaked out and lost control of the car. I didn't mean to!". Tyler said with his head bleeding, almost crying.

"Guys, stay calm, I've already called the police." A student said, approaching the two.

"Ethan! Are you okay?"; Jessica ran out towards Ethan, her hands shaking, and hugged the boy, worried.

Ethan couldn't answer. He and Bella looked at each other still, while Ethan held his own arm, feeling a lot of pain.

"What the fuck was that?" Mike said, ruffling Ethan's hair, trying to get him to answer.

A few minutes later, the paramedics arrived and Ethan, Bella, and Tyler were taken to the hospital. Mike ended up going along with Ethan.

Upon arrival, Ethan and Bella were placed on nearby stretchers where they were being attended to, while Mike stood outside, waiting to hear from his friend.

Because of the blow, Ethan's arm was bandaged, but did not need a cast.

Enid and Charlie rushed into the room, looking desperately for their children.

"Bella!" Charlie spoke loudly, approaching the two.

"Ethan, you're there." Enid shouted, doing the same. She hugged Ethan, who was being examined, and began to look at his face, trying to find any injuries. "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere? What were you thinking, boy?"

"I'm fine, Mom!" Ethan replied, trying to calm her down.

"Everything okay?" Charlie said to Bella. "Let's talk later!". He completed angrily, looking at Tyler.

"I'm fine, dad. Stay calm!". Bella replied, disinterested.

"I'm sorry, guys! I tried to stop...". Tyler said to Bella and Ethan.

"It's okay, bro! I didn't mean it...". Ethan replied, reassuringly.

"No! It's definitely not okay!". Charlie said, irritated.

"Relax, Charlie, we'll figure it out later!" Enid said, running her hand over his arm.

Ethan and Bella looked at each other for a few seconds, realizing something weird was going on between them but tried to focus on something else.
