Throwback, girl meets surgeon

6 months ago, 09 November 2035

"Well, we are finally here." Said Hannah as she took a deep breath equally stunned by the majestic building before us. People were not lying when they said that even a grand castle for a king would pale in comparison to the work of art in front of us.

" Remember guys whatever happens inside, we should stay true to our own paths and all we have been taught at our medical school, alright?" said Melissa ( Dove) who was obviously nervous as she was rubbing her hands together and biting her lower lip.

Hannah rolled her eyes, folded her arms close to her chest, and said" We hear you, mom! honestly, you can not tie a leash on me before we even enter the premises. I mean though I love our degree, I am here to finally live out my fantasy. I am going to go in that building and I will meet my future husband and make him fall in love with me at first sight just like any female lead would."

" yeah right and you will fall off the stairs only to be caught by the villian instead of the male lead hero." Dove replied this time being her turn to roll her eyes

" Ah! do not be jealous when i meet him." huffed Hannah

" I would be jealous the day you let your brilliance shine." scoffed Dove

" Are you two fighting again? You just stopped arguing like 10 minutes ago on the way here and you have started again."I said facepalming, "I really do not understand how you are best friends." I stated.

" what brilliance, I can not disadvantage my enemies by having both beauty and brains and then show both of them off. I must choose one to fully cultivate." Hannah responded to Dove with a proud grin.

Dove rolled her eyes, intentionally ignored Hannah and looked at me to say " you are the glue keeping us together."

" But you two were together before knowing me," I stated.

" Well, i would have long ditched her had you not showed up. I mean who can put up with a girl whose head is in the clouds." Dove said as she sighed " I was silently struggling before you came along and now we share the struggle of having such a best friend." Hannah continued and we laughed as we walked to the entrance of Areela Military Medical School.

So the context here is that we ( Hannah, Dove, and myself) got a chance to be exchange students at Areela Military Medical School. Areela is one of the biggest military-based medical schools in the world and it has equally astounding professors and medical doctors who give forty-five minutes world-class lectures and that is the standard rule for this institute. The 45 minutes rule is there because since the doctors are so good they are constantly needed on the front lines and so they have limited time to teach. People would find this crazy because the school could just hire professors to work normal hours like our medical school ( a local medical school called Triez Medical School) but that is what makes Areela so special. It gives students top-tier working resources and brings in the people who either discovered or created the content featured in the resources.

Many countries have attempted to create clones of Areela and many have failed mine included and that is why an exchange program invite from this school is a big deal. They do not consider your background or anything when they select and thus elite families do have access to the military school and they have zero power.

Military medical schools can stand on their own without backing from elite families while some normal medical schools are run by the elites and this is one of the reasons why our normal medical schools and military medical schools compete aggressively showing no mercy to one another. However, there is another powerful organization that recently emerged, they call themselves the Yris and but to the general public, they are known as the terrorists.

The Yris group is quite mysterious because there is no data on it despite it being active for quite a while and it's terrorizing activities are growing day by day. The only thing known about them is that they are strongly against petty crimes and all their "activities" ( which are not criminal activities according to them) have motivations and reason. Anyway,It was this group that led to the collaboration between the normal medical schools and military medical institutes. The Yris's growing power and influence is a daunting occurrence for governments all over the world and medical institutes all together. And why is that? Because they self-manufactured the RB09 virus which bacame their debut into the world making them known all over.

The RB09 virus according to available information is a eRNA virus that alters the host's DNA at specific gene locations based on the what the Yris members are trying to achieve. For example, a few high class people have been murdered through the virus (which now are classified and i am unaware of) and before their deaths they all had 'special traits' which marked out a specific trait of the individual Yris hated and used to as motive to murder them. They target specific genes for specific parts of the body. However, the mechanism of how victims are selected is not the concerning factor for the government but it is the fact that all these high class murders were done in the public eye and the mode of killing was spontaneous combustion of the body starting at a specific part of the body then slowly moving to the rest of the body.

Scientists are in a frenzy trying to figure out the reason behind the bizarre occurences but to the world's dismay, nothing points them in the right direction. However, while doing research they also discovered that they could also alter our genes to allow our bodies to adapt to the use of special euipment to fight off the virus because aside from the instant combustion to kill people, the Yris created an army of people with the virus which is somehow controlling them and making them follow their commands. Now, the problem here is that the government can not identify these people as they live amongst the general public and behave normally too until they get chosen to combust in the very public eye they live under.

Since Areela is the place with the resources, it was proposed that medical students who which to participate in the study and who have suitable genes should go to Areela to take part. Students ( including me) from all over the world will be catered for in Areela for a couple of months for training so that the governments can come up with a solution. They chose medical professionals because they are already equipped with the knowledge to save lives and perhaps they can work with the scientists to find ways to save people with the virus...as soon as they can detect it.

Oh, petty crimes still happen despite having terrorists on the loose. Just as we were about to enter the premises, a girl who I assumed was a future classmate was stabbed by a guy I assumed was her boyfriend. As people rushed to help and call the police, we followed as well. The girl's condition accelerated to a cardiac arrest. Someone called a nearby professor who rushed to the scene with his friend. The professor started working on the girl in an attempt to stabilize her but...

" She is already dead." a magnetic, enchanting, cold, and uninterested voice from beside the professor said

The scene was now despondent the initial panic died down along with the hopeful atmosphere that the girl could be saved.

" How would you know?! You have not examined her and you are not a doctor!" a student shouted in anger to the man who spoke earlier and I assumed she was the friend of the girl.

" There is no use, Walter. She's gone." the man said completely ignoring the student's rightful outburst.

"NO, please do not stop, she may still live. Please professor help her." The friend's plead made other people around chant, "do not give up on her." over and over again. Somehow Hannah and even Dove started chanting along with them though i am not so shocked about Hannah, she's an explorer.

Though I was not chanting I could understand the sentiment each and every one of those who chanted had at the time but it was no use and I was used to demonstrate that. " you there, please come here." the man said as he gestured for me to go to him. I hesitated, I mean i do not know him after all.

" I won't hurt you. You are a medical student right?"he asked

"Yes." I replied

" then come and tell me what do you see from my stand point." He said as though totally oblivious to the chants that were causing worry for the professor whom he came with.

" The lady failed to recover after 20 minutes of CPR,her fingers are blue and she has no pulse..." my voice couldn't come out any louder anymore because of the friend's desperate cry when i spoke. And why did this man make me do such a thing, who is he anyway?

Thankfully, the professor finished the task for me and I simply went back to the place I was standing at with my friends though I felt like crap because of what had just happened. I felt so angry and sad that I decided to confront the man, he laughed about it and told me to take it as early training for what we are yet to see in the field and I also found out that he is the youngest surgeon in country F who is a special lecturer for Areela. Though I really did not care, my hope was to never meet him again.
