1 Prologue

Earth Kingdom

Somewhere in Republic City

It was a stormy night in Republic City and the people were running trying to seek shelter from the rain. Somewhere in an alley across a large abandoned industrial building, a young man, who looked to be about 16, was lying there, faced down, possibly unconscious. His clothes were tattered and his hands were covered in bandages. His dark brown hair was disorganized and covered up most of his face.

From inside the building, a creak sounded from one of the rusty metal doors. A homeless old man wearing a thick dark green scarf and dressed in a dark brown coat was seen coming out of the abandoned building. He reached into his pockets and took a pair of gloves and put them on. He tightened his scarf a bit more and buttoned up his coat for warmth and just stood outside, not too far from the building, and looked around.

As he was enjoying the rainfall, he looked ahead and saw something laying on the ground, in the alley. He couldn't make out what it was, because it was nighttime and the lights were a bit dim, so how took out a broken umbrella from the side and walked over to it to take a better look. As he moved closer and closer, the object became more clear.

It was the body of a young boy!

The man was stunned for a second. He immediately put down the broken umbrella and dragged him out of the rain. He turned the boy's body over and fell to his knees as he bent over and put the side of his head on the boy's chest to hear his heartbeat, and he was surprised. The boy was still alive!

The old man looked around to see if anyone was still around and there wasn't, so he lifted the boy on his shoulder, grabbed his broken umbrella, and quickly brought him into the abandoned building.

He gently put him on a makeshift bed, which was close to a fire. He took off his coat and his green scarf and hung them up on the wall. He made his way to the boy and examined him, but He couldn't find anything wrong with him, apart from the bandages on his hands and a scar on his right eye, which he found peculiar. As he was about to nudge the boy awake, the boy suddenly let out a low groan and slowly opened his eyes. Seeing the unfamiliar surroundings, the boy slowly sat up and voiced out his thoughts.

"Who are you? W-where am I?".

The man answered him calmly, "The name's Loui, kid, and you're in Republic City. You alright?".

The boy looked at him with a hint of confusion and thought, "Republic City? Where have I heard that name before?". And before he was going to say something else, a sharp pain suddenly pierced his head, and he let out a low moan. The old man saw him holding both of his hands to his head like he was in pain, so he quickly grabbed a piece of cloth, poured some warm water on it, and gave it to him.

"Here kid, take this!".

The boy grabbed it and put the warm cloth over his head and took some deep breaths.

"Thanks, man, I appreciate it".

The old man sat back on his chair and looked at the boy curiously and wondered how he got there and where he came from. According to the clothes that he wore, he had to be Earth kingdom, but he still couldn't figure out how the boy got there. Maybe he ran away from home, or maybe he didn't have a home, or...maybe he was part of a gang. Quite possibly the Triple Threat Triad, because the gang mostly consisted of Waterbenders, Firebenders, and also Earthbenders. That would explain the bandaged hands and the scar on his right eye. He had to be an Earthbender and a member of the Triple Threat Triad!

The old man was now full of worries. Did he just pick up a gang member without thinking? He noticed the boy coming to his senses, and he then wanted to ask the boy some questions.

"Hey, kid. You're not part of any, uh...any gangs, are you?".

The boy looked at the old man, and chuckled, "wh-what are you talking about, old man? What gang? I'm not part of any gang".

The old man interrogated him again, "It's just that...you know, with your hands all bandaged up like your a fighter and the scar on your right eye...".

"What do ya mean a scar...", the boy suddenly stopped mid-sentence and looked at his hands that were about to touch his face. He saw that his hands were indeed bandaged up like a fighter and he looked down and his clothes were completely different. He suddenly got up and ran towards a mirror that he saw on a nearby table, and it startled the old man when the boy started to panic out of nowhere and dashed towards the mirror. The boy hastily grabbed the mirror and who he saw in the reflection freaked him out.

"What the...what's going on?", said the boy silently while touching his face. He was lightly brown-skinned and had slightly narrow eyes, which were also dark blue colored, and saw a scar on his right eye just as the old man said. His hair was a thick dark brown color, a well-sculpted nose, slightly thin lips. He was a rather handsome young man.

He also inspected his body, which looked like it was built to fight. And his clothes were an earthy green color, and there was a symbol on his chest that looked oddly familiar.

"That's the symbol of the Earth kingdom", He muttered.

He quickly turned around and looked at the old man who was just staring at him with question marks popping out of his head. He then questioned him, hoping he would say what he thought was going to say.

"Old man, am I in the Earth Kingdom, and...and is this really Republic City?".

"Yeah?", answered the old man with a confused tone.

"Oh, my go-...and do you know who Avatar Aang is?", asked the boy again, but this time with tears filling up his eyes and a smile appearing on his face.

The old man couldn't help but wonder if he didn't just pick up a crazy person in the alley instead,

"Of course, everyone in the world knows Avatar Aang. He's the one that stopped the 100-year war and with the help of Firelord Zuko, created Republic City. A-are you sure ya didn't hit head kid, and by the way, and What's your name?".

The boy just stood silently, and contemplated at what the old man just said. He started to laugh out loud while crying tears of joy.

"Kai...my name's Kai".
