Chapter 9 : Dire Straights Back Home

Salmakia and her father had the provisions sorted and put up in the center of the pack. And it was a testament to just how dire things were that they didn’t first take the things we brought to the storehouses, they just began distributing them from there.

And I knew one thing for sure — the storehouses had to be empty.

They were either completely dry, or they were nearly depleted.

And it only told me one thing. I had to come back. I had to leave, go with Varon back to the Rising Moon, and return with more provisions for my pack.

The piles of food went first, with almost everyone in the pack queueing for those. And then the medicine went. Because where there was a scarcity of food, there was bound to be sicknesses.

“I don’t understand,” I said, turning to Salmakia. “Why haven’t they gone hunting? The herds around the area–”

But she didn’t let me finish.
