A Normal Day

A loud ringing bounced through my brain as I sat up in my bed. The sun was shining through the curtains of the window on the other side of the room. I blinked the sleepiness away before leaning over and hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock and the ringing stopped.

"Ugh..."

I fell backwards onto my pillow. I lay there for a second before leaning back up and tossing my feet over the edge of my bed. I stood and looked around.

My apartment was pretty clean. I was pretty active with my chores. No dishes, empty trash, no clutter. The usual. I walked over the dresser against the wall next to my bed. I pulled out the drawers going through them grabbing clothes for today. After I was satisfied with what I'd chose, I grabbed a towel and walked towards the shower.

-20 MINUTES LATER-

I closed the front door behind me and locked it. I started walking to school, lost in thought. There was a lot of incidents happening recently. There was even a construction accident a week ago. A girl and guy. The girl was killed and the guy was sent to the hospital to recover.

I crossed the street and stopped after a block. I turned to look at the yellow caution tape surrounding the construction site.

The school bell rang in the distance~

"Damn, I'm gonna be late!"

I began running in the direction of the school. I made it through the gate just as the teacher pushed it closed to lock it.

"Cutting it a little close there, Ito."

"Sorry teach. I got distracted on the way here."

"That's the third time this week. Set your alarm thirty minutes earlier so you have time to daydream on the way here."

"Yessir."

I entered the school and walked to my locker. I put in the code and pulled off the lock. I opened the locker and switched shoes.

"Ito!"

I turned to see who's footsteps were approaching.

"Yato, hey."

"Ready for the 'pop quiz' today? I hope you studied."

"No, I'm just gonna wing it again."

"You're like the only person I know that can not study and still get good grades."

-AFTER FIRST PERIOD-

I walked through the hall towards the vending machines at the other end. I reached into my pocket and grabbed my wallet.

"Only five hundred yen left?"

I sighed and walked to the drink machine.

"I have enough to get a drink at least."

I slid the coin into the slot and clicked the drink I wanted. It made a clanging sound as it fell through the machine and hit the bottom. I reached down and pulled the drink out of the compartment. The swaying door slammed shut, echoing through the halls.

I popped open the can and took a sip. I let out a long sigh.

"I'm so not a morning person."

My watch read '9:03'. I began walking to my next class, tossing away the can after taking the last sip. I sat down in my desk at the back of the class waiting for the day to end.

-AFTER 4TH PERIOD-

"Ugh... I'm so hungry."

Yato walked up behind me and dropped his arm around my shoulder.

"Then let's go hit up the cafeteria and go to the roof."

I nodded and followed him to the cafe.

We got our food and made our way to the roof. The break was mostly silent except for the birds and occasionally exchange of words between us and the two other students that were sitting opposite of us.

After eating, we made our way back down the stairs for our next class.

-AFTER 6TH PERIOD-

I sat in the courtyard in the shade of the trees. I checked my watch again. It read 1:37. Yato strode across the yard in my direction.

"You aren't going to class?"

"Next period is my free period. I was gonna wait here since the book store isn't open until two."

"You and your books, I'll never understand the appeal."

I chuckled.

"It's not appealing. It's just a distraction. Something to get lost in."

"I can't sit still that long," he said.

The bell began ringing~

"I gotta go man. Tell me about the book though."

"Okay man, now get to class."

-20 MINUTES LATER-

I walked down the street to the bookstore. This was my favorite hangout spot. I was always here when I had free time. I walked through the aisles of bookshelves looking for something that peaked my interest. I picked out a few and walked to the groups of tables in the center of the building. I picked the seat furthest away from the rest for the quiet. I'd been here a lot so I was pretty familiar with everything about it. Today, the smell was slightly different. I had a bad feeling.

BOOM!

An explosion outside shook the entire block. I began to hear screaming. Walked toward the door made the screaming louder and louder. I peaked out the door and looked up around. There was a charred Nissan burning a few buildings down along with shattered glass littering the sidewalk. Presumably from the force of the explosion. There was a person laying in the middle of the street. I saw a woman and child crawling backwards away from it. They were the cause of the screaming. A man was walking away from the body with blood dripping from his hands and smudged around his mouth.

He was slightly hunched. I saw his shirt had a hole tore in it at his lower back. He slowly stepped closer towards the woman and child, still screaming and crying for help.

I tried to get up the courage to go see what was happening. I really didn't want to get involved but there was a child. I felt the need that something had to be done.

"Damn it all," I yelled.

My legs started moving first. I was running in the mans direction. It took me a second to realize I had already started running. I came to a stop between the man and the other two. I turned to look at the man.

"Wait... you're a gho..."

Blood shot up my throat and out of my mouth. A sharp pain took over my entire body. It hurt so bad. I wanted to scream. I looked down. There was something stuck through my stomach. It protruded from the hole in the back of the mans shirt. The man grabbed me by the throat and squeezed. The thing that was coming from his back began to retract. I screamed in pain. My conscious slowly weakened. The last thing I saw before everything turned black was the background blurring as I was thrown to the ground.
