David

David was an average boy, 17-years-old, a little on the thicker side with long brown hair with the tips still sun-bleached from the summer sun while working outside on the family farm he lived at with his parents on the outskirts of a small town with a population just under ten-thousand. He was a senior in high-school and the year was already half over. He was currently sitting down in the lunchroom at school alone while scrolling through some social media sites to see what everyone was up to lately.

"Hmm, looks like the government is raising the debt ceiling again."

"Amanda gained quite a bit of weight, dang."

"Oh look, Jeremy is off on another vacation with his family. What's that, the 4th time this semester?"

"Hey Davey whatcha up to man!" A slim, tall kid in David's grade came up to him. That kids name was Ryan. Ryan was your normal below average student. He did the bare minimum to pass the classes and averaged a C grade or less in all his classes, besides gym. Ryan has been David's best friend since elementary school. They met in school and immediately hit it off. Back then Ryan came up to David one day and looked at him sitting alone in the corner of a classroom and said to him, "Hey what are you doing all alone?" And David answered back "I don't know anyone here and I don't even want to be here." "Well, that makes two of us!" Ryan laughed as he sat next to David and the two have been inseparable since.

They avoided the masses, not going out of there way to try to befriend them, nor necessarily to avoid them. They just went with the flow and for the most part they were pretty friendly with everyone and vise-versa. Ryan was always the care-free one and never had a worry in the world. David on the other hand was pretty good at stressing out about everything he could. Like if he would be able to afford gas for his car if he took a week off of work.

"I'm just doing the old same-old. Nothing." David responded with a boring tone. "Whatcha doing after school then?" Ryan asked excitedly. "Going to work, you know, the usual?" David said back with a semi-annoyed tone. "Oh yeah that's right, man you need to call in sick or something so we can go out and party or something." Ryan said back with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Yeah, ill tell my dad that I cant work because I'm sick, and then leave the house to go party." David said, getting more and more annoyed. "Whatever man, I'm partying tonight, even if its just a solo party." Ryan said dejectedly as he walked away. "Man what's his deal, maybe he's depressed or something." David thought to himself. David knew though that he didn't have time to party, he only had another half year of school to decide what's next for him. He had no plans, no idea what he was going to do, and just wanted to relax and be rich, but without actually doing anything too hard to get there. He had to figure out how to do it.

Later that same evening

David just walked in from feeding the cows with his dad. He threw his muddy boots off and chucked them into the corner of the houses entryway. His dad came in behind him still talking, "So whatcha think Dave? You gonna think about it?"

David's father was trying to convince him to reach out to the local government farm agency about taking out a loan to start his own farm. He had the required credentials and proof of farm management to possibly qualify for a ranch loan if he can put down a proper sized payment and find a qualified place. The only problem was that David wasn't really sure if he wanted to keep farming. In fact, he hated farming. He only did it because it was convenient and his dad paid him enough to keep him around and not complaining.

"I don't know dad, I haven't really though to much about it in depth yet, would I really be able to survive on my own while still farming for you, plus who knows if I can even find a proper place to qualify for the farm loan." David replied with no enthusiasm in his voice.

"Well, I think you should consider getting a better paying job after school and think about it some more. I'm not telling you that you have to, just that it would be a sweet way to get your own house at a young age. Plus you'd be years ahead of everyone else."

"Yeah maybe, let me think about it some more dad."

And he did, he thought about it long and hard for weeks. He considered all the possibilities, he did the math, he scouted for houses. Until he finally made his decision 2 months later.
