1 Prologue: Fear

Mark:

Fear is just a concept, an abstract noun, but very, very real. Fear makes you do terrible things, turns you into a monster. But fear also makes you smarter, more cautious. A healthy amount of fear is important for rational thinking but too much of it can cloud your judgment and lead you to make stupid mistakes.

He’d never experienced this kind of fear before, this raw, intense pressure on his chest that didn’t leave room for anything else. He had to get away from it, somehow. And so he ran, and ran and ran until he couldn’t anymore. Even then, it was hard to stop. Stopping required a lot of bravery and he didn’t that, even if he was ashamed to admit it. He was afraid of what stopping might bring, he was afraid to die, but most of all, he was afraid to choose because there was no right choice. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place. And so he ran, as fast as he could and he didn’t stop.
