23 Chapter 20



The Next Day

Ava

"Why did you leave the party suddenly? You just left me a text. What happened back there?" After I left alone that too running away from the hall. Everyone was confused. I texted Lucas to bring back Shane because I didn't want Shane to watch me cry.

"Lucas, I know this may sound sudden. We dated for some time and you always been for me and Shane calls you Dad." He had a question mark on his face. He was confused about what I was heading to. "I am not getting where this conversation is heading."

"Will you marry me?"

"Are you serious?" He looks shocked by the sudden question but I knew he has always loved me since we met but he respected my decision of staying friends. I held his hand and smiled at him.

"We will announce this over dinner with Samantha and David."

"Woah Woah Woah. Easy there, tiger. I didn't say yes." He agreed after I persuaded him a lot. David is moving on I should too.

I started getting ready for dinner. I decided to wear a two-piece dress set containing an off-shoulder crop top and a floor-length skirt. It was white imprinted with colorful butterflies. I let my hair open and put on some eyeliner and lipstick.

We drive to the restaurant Samantha texted and why was I not surprised. I used to have dinner with David often back then and when we entered in they were already seated. He purposely chose the same seat where we used to sit.

We sat down in front of them and David winks at me. He was teasing me and I knew that very well.

"Ava I will not let this go. You practically ran out of your best friend's engagement party." Samantha grumbles at me glaring at me."Yes. I would love to know too. What was so urgent that you had to leave your best friend's engagement party?"

Again with the taunts. He knows he was the reason I left.

"I am sorry Samantha. I will make it up to you. Well, Lucas and I have an announcement to make." David has his eyes on me and I could feel his gaze on me even though I was not seeing him.

"We wanted to tell you this yesterday but we couldn't..." Lucas says and David interrupts.

"What is it? Is it something to Ava? Is she going to?"

Samantha glares at him and slaps his hand."Stop it, David. Tell me what it is."

"Lucas and I are getting married."

I smile and look at David who is surprisingly shocked. I wanted to see his reaction to this and he looks surprised I don't know why.

"What the actual fuck?When did this happen?" He slams his fist on the table. Samantha holds his hand to calm him. I didn't expect this to be his reaction.

"It's been a month," Lucas says timidly.

"A month." He looks at me glaring at me trying to find answers looking at my eyes but I managed to keep a calm expression on my face.

"Does the idea of me settling down troubles you David? I truly love Lucas and he is also the father of my child. It's high time." I scoff at him. A taste of your own medicine David. How does it feel now?

"I am truly shocked, to be honest. How do I not know anything? Lucas, can you explain?" Samantha inquires looking at us for an explanation.

"It just happened," Lucas says and sighs. I held his hand beneath the table and I looked at David who was furious. God knows why.

"Hey, We can do our wedding together. It will be so much fun to be married to my best friend on the same day." I suggest and I didn't see Samantha as happy as I expected her to be. She gulps."That would be great."

I was closely observing David. He clenched his fists tight until they were white. His stare didn't move for a second and if looks could kill Lucas would be dead now.

He was not at all happy with the news and I don't know why. All those things he said yesterday. He was marrying my best friend. Me getting married shouldn't be a bother. Does David hate me so much that he can't see me happy?

"Lucas, A word outside."

"Sure I will be back." I kissed Lucas on the cheek to get a reaction from David. He was furious. His face turned red. I had never seen him this angry. "Don't take long. I will be waiting for you."

After the guys left I was wondering what David wanted to talk with Lucas but then I was distracted by Samantha. I was meeting her after a very long time that when we started talking about how things have been I forgot about them.

It's been about fifteen minutes since they went outside to talk. I was about to ask Samantha when I got a notification.

"Lucas just texted me. He left. He had some work." I wonder what. What did David say to Will that he left without me? Did he tell the truth about our past to him? I hope he didn't say ill about me.

"I have to leave too. I am going to my friend's house. She sprained her ankle and needs my help. I have to go. I am so sorry." Samantha says getting up from her chair. I hug her and we promised to meet again before I leave."See you soon."

Left all alone, I went outside to see if there was any taxi. I was waiting when a car pulled over and stood in front of me then the person inside lowered down the glass. It was David. Why am I not surprised? "Want a ride?"

"I would rather walk than go with you." I wonder what he has to do with me after spoiling my evening yesterday. Didn't he taunt me enough? What more he has to say to hurt me?

"Come on Ava, Come in." He pleads but there was no way I was going with him but looks like everyone in his favor. It starts raining and I can't stand here getting wet in the rain. The last thing I want is to be drenched and catch a cold. So I immediately sat in.

"Looks like you are still easy to convince." He says as he starts driving."You think you know me. Then you are very wrong."

If you knew me so well David You would have known I still love you and how much it hurts me to watch you get married.

"Oh Ava, I know you more than you know yourself." He smirks and I scoff at him rolling my eyes.

"Can you just drop me off at the hotel?" I didn't want to talk to him anymore. What does he think he is? I looked out of the window, the sky was pitch black. I could hear the pattering of raindrops on the window and then it became pitter-patter and eventually, it came to a stop.

I opened the window and a cool breeze blew now. It had a way of moving my hair. It also carries the scent of earth, soft after washing in the rain. I loved this earthy smell after rain. I took a deep breath with my eyes closed, sticking my head outside the window. For a moment I forgot about everything that's when I realized we didn't take the left to the hotel.

"David where are we going? The hotel was to the left. You missed it."

He didn't say a word. His eyes were on the road.

"Tell me now or I will jump off the car." I tried to take a look outside to figure out where we were going but it was raining again and it was too dark to notice anything and out of nowhere there was complete silence and the only sound was the sound of the pattering rain on the glass window.

He stopped the car with a jerk that my head almost hit the front and then he unbuckled his seat belt and stepped outside standing in the rain and stood in front of the car his back facing me. For the first time, I was not able to understand what he was thinking and that scared me.
